Margo Gianos: Teen CEO, Honestly Margo

Margo Gianos is the Teen CEO of Honestly Margo. With her mom, Irene, Margo launched Honestly Margo in 2013 with the introduction of a product she developed in the kitchen of her home. Since the launch of the brand, Margo has actively marketed the brand and positioned it in more than 400 markets throughout the United States. In addition to running a growing bath and beauty brand, Margo is a high school student, entering her senior year, participates in school sports, and is an active member of her church.  When she's not hanging out with friends, she loves to come up with fun and unique products to bring to the marketplace.

What do you love most about Your City?

Margo: I love Oklahoma City because it’s not too large, yet it feels big. It’s awesome when you know everyone in the city. The people here in Oklahoma have that southern hospitality, which makes them great.

Irene: We love how friendly the people are in Oklahoma City.  They’re warm and hospitable, and you’ll never meet a stranger.  Another plus is that our traffic isn’t as bad as other major cities.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

M: My favorite breakfast meal is scrambled eggs with shredded cheese. My favorite local restaurant would have to be Charleston’s. They have the most amazing chicken tenders, steak, soup and warm buttery croissants.

I: I love omelettes with mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes and a little bit of cheese.  But, when I’m at home, I’ll eat a poached egg and a few slices of extra crispy bacon.  Oklahoma City is growing with amazing locally-owned restaurants, but one of my favorites, that’s been around for decades, is Charleston’s.  Everything on their menu is SO good, and the service is always fantastic.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM

M: I’m hitting my snooze button, because I’m definitely not an early bird. On school days I wake up at around 6:45, and get dressed.

I: I’m usually sleeping till about 6:30 when I get up; then I make breakfast for the babes before they go to school.

10:00 AM

M: I have a break period at school around this time, so this is when I do art. Art, I’ve found, has been my release, and helps me take a break and breathe during stressful days. I love to use colored pencils and acrylic paint.

I: I’m typically working in my office tending to matters that need my attention right away. If I’m not doing that, I’m running my household errands.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

M: My favorite lunch has to be Chick-Fil-A! I love the nuggets with honey mustard, and sometimes, if I really want to be healthy, I’ll get the grilled nuggets.

I: I love Cafe 501 in Classen Curve!  Everything they have is SO delicious!  But, I always get the same thing every time… the Tilapia Salad!

7:00 PM

M: Usually, it’s dinner time, but I’m also doing homework or business work! Most nights at this time, I’m working together with my mom as we go over our to-dos.

I: I’m usually wrapping up dinner with the family.  It could be something I’ve made, or if it was a hectic day, we’d be planning our PostMates delivery.

11:00 PM

M: I’m usually tucked into bed at this time, scrolling through social media on my phone and making my to-do list for the next day. (I live off of my to-do lists LOL)

I: I’m usually scrolling through social media, or texting Margo random thoughts because our brains usually don’t stop with ideas!  I also have a word game I like to play on my phone to help me unwind and close my eyes.  It’s my way of unplugging and shutting down.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

M: I drink coffee almost every morning! I put one cream and one sugar in it, and if I’m especially tired, I’ll just drink my coffee black. After I get home from school at 4, I’ll make another cup so I can stay awake to be productive!

I: I’m thankful that I’m not one of those people that needs coffee to wake up and keep me going.  I try to be as healthy as I can be, and drink lots of water.  I’ll do water with lemon or I’ll make a Sonic run and get a large iced water with blackberry and lemon.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

M: My most used app is definitely Instagram or Snapchat! I love using Instagram to see great pictures, and to stay connected with other brands. I use Snapchat to chat with my friends everyday. I’m still a normal teenager, so I’m constantly talking with friends on Snapchat :).

I: One of my favorite apps is Google Keep.  It helps me keep organized no matter where I go.  It syncs with my phone as well as my computer. I can share things easily on it, color code specific notes, and just have any thought I have with me at all times.  I really don’t know what I’d do without it!

What should everyone try at least once?

M: I think that everyone should try to learn how to meditate. I meditate most nights before I sleep using the Calm App. It helps me unwind and center myself. Because I’m managing school, work and a social life, my life can get hectic. It’s nice to just breathe, and to halt your brain from running a million miles an hour. I think this is super important for everyone to do. I feel a difference in my emotional state when I meditate the night before.

I: A completely random, but exhilarating experience that I think everyone should try is snorkeling at night.  It’s a thrilling experience in the dark: feeling the water temperature on your body in the cool temperature of the night; seeing the sea life in a whole new way with flashlights.  As long as you do it with someone who is experienced, and knows the ocean, it feels safe.  I love snorkeling, but this took it to a whole new level.  Definitely a must do!

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

M: I love getting lost in my art. I have an obsession with using my Prismacolor colored pencils to draw birds. Birds are symbols of freedom and happiness so it brings me a lot of joy when I’m focusing on a certain bird. I encourage everyone to find the thing that makes them happy, and to take time for themselves.

I: I could get lost on the beach for hours.  Seven Mile Beach is my favorite spot, with its white sands and crystal blue waters.  Literally, the sound of the water, the breeze in my hair, the sun beating down on my skin as I’m laying directly on the sand, puts me in a meditative state.  I can get lost for hours, days or months!
