Lisa Hsia: EVP, Digital Bravo, Oxygen, Universal Kids Media

My NativeAdVert:

As Executive Vice President, Bravo, Oxygen, and Universal Kids Digital Media, Lisa Hsia oversees the three brands digital businesses including the networks’ websites, and emerging platforms – gaming, audio, e-commerce, AR/VR and multiplatform programming. Based in New York, Hsia reports to Frances Berwick, President, Lifestyle Networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. During her tenure, Hsia has built Bravo Digital into an interactive powerhouse with breakthrough innovations including Bravo Talk Bubble, the first real-time social TV event to combine Facebook and Twitter with live TV viewing, Bravo Now, the first ever tablet/smart phone co-viewing companion experience, the Emmy winning “Last Chance Kitchen,” the ambitious transmedia initiative for “Top Chef,” and Play Live, a form of participation TV.  The cutting edge digital series “Last Chance Kitchen” allowed viewers to follow storylines across multiple platforms and resulted in the most streamed series in NBCUniversal history. Hsia also led the digital team to its second Emmy win in 2015 for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media - Multiplatform Storytelling for “The Singles Project.” More recently, she spearheaded the launch of the network’s first, standalone digital series “Going Off the Menu.”

Hsia added oversight of Oxygen in 2013 and in 2017 was instrumental in the network’s rebrand as a fulltime true crime television network for women. She continues the network’s position as a leader in the crime genre for multiplatform storytelling and original content and spearheaded the creation of the augmented reality app for iOS called “Forensic Detective: Inside the Crime Scene.” As part of the rebrand, Hsia led the digital team’s launch of the wildly popular weekly podcast “Martinis and Murder.” Most recently, Hsia has added digital oversight of Universal Kids to her purview. She will lead the team in building out Universal Kids’ multi-screen experiences for children 2-12.

Hsia originally joined NBCUniversal as Katie Couric’s Senior Producer and served as Vice President of NBC News since 2001, where she had executive oversight for the “Today” show, “Dateline” and the long-form programming unit Peacock Productions. An NBC News veteran of eleven years, she previously worked for ABC News as Diane Sawyer’s producer at “Prime Time Live” and is the recipient of six Prime Time News Emmy Awards. Hsia has received several honors including Ad Age’s “Media Maven,” Variety’s “New York Women’s Impact Report,” one of the “Top Women in Technology” by Multichannel News, Broadcasting & Cable’s “Digital All-Stars List,” Cynopsis Media’s “Most Intriguing People of the Year,” AWNY’s “Changing the Game” Award, Alliance for Women in Media’s “Stem Leadership in Media” Award, as well as CableFAX’s “Most Powerful Women in Cable” and “Digital Hot List.” She is a graduate of Harvard University and has a MBA from Columbia University Business School.

My Goal of the Day: Assume positive intent in others and be aware of unconscious bias – two things I learned in  leadership training that I’m trying daily to stay attuned to.

My Tip of the Day: Luck is when preparation meets opportunity

What do you love most about Your City?

I love the diversity of NYC .  You can bird watch in Central Park at dawn and watch world-class theater at night. And eat incredible ethnic meals in between! I love riding the 7 train out to Flushing.  The people-watching is amazing.  There’s a reason they call subway line the “international express.”

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Nova Scotia salmon scrambled with eggs and onion at Barney Greengrass

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Exercise – I alternate between swimming, biking, walking the loop around the reservoir or getting tortured by my trainer Andrea

10:00 AM – Could be anything from reading scripts for the Vanderpump Rules game, listening to our true crime podcast Martinis & Murder or meeting about the three upcoming connected TVE apps for Universal Kids

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Wu Liang Ye  -- terrific Sichuan food in midtown.  Dandan noodle appetizer, mapo tofu and stir-fried pea shoots

7:00 PM - Trying to get home to enjoy my husband’s amazing cooking

11:00 PM – hopefully, on my way to being asleep, but more likely my mind is still buzzing.  I’m very bad at letting go at the end of the day.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I start the day with hot water with lemon and end the day with seltzer water or a craft beer.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

#birdsofinstagram

What should everyone try at least once?

An all day hike in a beautiful natural place by yourself

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Fabric stores.  I sewed most of my clothing when I was young and while I don’t anymore, the experience left me with an addiction for textiles.  There’s nothing I love more than travelling and losing track of time at a local textile store or market.
