Dr. Vanessa LoBue: Associate professor of Psychology & Director of the Child Study Center, Rutgers University

My NativeAdVert:

Dr. Vanessa LoBue is an associate professor of Psychology and director of the Child Study Center at Rutgers University in Newark, New Jersey. She regularly teaches courses on child development to both undergraduates and graduate students. Her research focuses on emotional development in infants and young children. She has a monthly blog on Psychology Today called “The Baby Scientist” where she writes about research on child development for parents. She is also a mom. In her new book, 9 Months In, 9 Months Out: A Scientist’s Tale of Pregnancy and Parenthood, she presents real-time account of pregnancy and the first year of parenthood from the perspective of a new mother who is also a researcher of infant and child development.

My Goal of the Day: To be the best version of myself.

My Thought of the Day: Be generous with the time you give to others.

My Action of the Day: Write something, anything.

My Deed of the Day: As a researcher in child development who also has children of her own, I feel a responsibility to write about basic research in a way that is accessible to parents. I do this by keeping a monthly blog for Psychology Today. So along with my usual lab and teaching responsibilities, I try to take some time each day to write for parents.

My Tip of the Day: Writing is like running: If you do it frequently, it will get easier and you will go farther each day.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

I love walking around New York City in the spring, when the weather is just starting to get warm for the first time and the streets are lined with people at tables enjoying their day.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Pamela’s in Pittsburgh is the best breakfast you’ll ever have. Try the chocolate chip banana pancakes.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – I am awake and getting myself ready for the day so that soon when my two boys wake up, I can be fresh and awake to help them get ready for their days.

10:00 AM – I am busy at work, either teaching a class, meeting with students, working in the lab, or writing at my desk.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

A fruit bowl from Playa Bowl in Newark.

7:00 PM -  I am snuggling with my boys on the couch, getting them calmed down for bedtime.

11:00 PM – I have been asleep for hours, resting up for another busy day.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Coffee, and lots of it. And hopefully a cold beer at the end of the day.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

The Photos app, where I can look at recent (and not so recent) pictures of my family.

What should everyone try at least once?

Every single new food that’s put in front of you.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Anywhere in New York City.
