Alice Gu began her directing career initially as a still photographer/ cinematographer. After graduating with her BFA in photography from the University of California, San Diego, she started by shooting stills for the music industry, for the likes of Sony Music, Warner Brothers, and Geffen. She soon realized that she could actualize her creative vision further in moving images and began pursuing a career in the motion picture world.
A Los Angeles native, Alice was exposed to surf, snow, and music at an early age. Her styles range anywhere gritty and raw to elegant beauty. She has had the privilege to shoot documentaries taking her from the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, touring with rock bands throughout Europe, and following the elite professional surfers of the World Championship Tour. Her commercial clients for print and live action include TBWA/ Chiat Day, Media Arts Lab, Deutsche, Berlin Cameron, Cole & Weber, Pereira & O’Dell, Doremus, Publicis, Beats by Dre, Laird Hamilton, ESPN, FIFA, NFL, NHL, NBA, the WSL, Apple, Peta, and the American Humane Association. As a Director of Photography, she has worked with world-reknown directors as Werner Herzog, Stacy Peralta, Rory Kennedy, and Daniel Junge.
What do you love most about Your City?
Los Angeles has so much to offer in terms of culture and arts, food, nature, opportunity, and community. On top of all these things, as an avid surfer, the ocean is my solace and is what I am most grateful for in Los Angeles.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
I will forever mourn my beloved AXE in Venice, but it’s now it’s the Gjusta breakfast. Favorite breakfast there is between bagel with kippered salmon or the fresh fruit with yogurt and granola.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – If I don’t have an early call time, I’m definitely sleeping. I’ve never been a morning person.
10:00 AM - Surfing
12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?
My favorite place to be for lunch is Little Beach House in Malibu for the vibe. But really, favorite meal? Probably Din Tai Fung.
7:00 PM - In an ideal world, cooking and putting the kid to bed. No matter how busy I am, it’s important for me to carve out the time for night night time for the baby.
11:00 PM – This is my quiet time. I’m catching up on reading and work.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Very boring answer. Water! And, not enough!
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
I really do try to not have too much screen time and enjoy being PRESENT in real life. However, it’s 2018 and everyone’s on Instagram. Favorite accounts would have to be Petrolicious and The Kangaroo Sancturary.
What should everyone try at least once?
Something that terrifies and thrills you.
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
Tokyo. Prague. A jungle in the tropics.
