Michelle Barrett: Broker, The Agency

Michelle Barrett was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She went to Marymount High School and got her undergraduate degree at Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. After founding a wine-in-a-can startup company in 2011 that didn’t take off as planned, Michelle left LA for a few years and moved to San Francisco to work in the tech industry. It took some time to find her passion, but once moving back to LA, Michelle connected the dots and realized it involved homes, architecture, interior design and people. Michelle started her career in real estate over two years ago at the Agency and her love for the industry has grown ever since. Her grandfather was a real estate agent in LA, and Michelle has been thrilled to follow in his footsteps.

Real estate in LA has its glamorous moments, like filming Million Dollar Listing and seeing $70M homes in Bel-Air, but Michelle has discovered it takes a lot of work, patience, determination and motivation to be successful. It’s purely commission-based, so the work you put in is what you get back. Michelle has benefited from incredible mentorship and support from coworkers, and The Agency has become her extended family. The great thing about the job is that you are your own boss, which has its ups and downs, but with a vast LA network and being at the right place at the right time, it's the best job possible. There is no ceiling or limit to what you can do.

What do you love most about Your City?

There are many things I love about this city. I’m grateful that I can be active outdoors year round. You can go on hikes, ride your bike to lunch, or head down to the beach to play dice and watch the sunset, all in the middle of winter. We are the entertainment and entrepreneurial capital of the world, we have a Hollywood nightlife scene and home to some of the best sports teams in the country. LA is a combination of a relaxed vibe with ambitious people. It’s a dynamic culture that just works and is unlike anywhere else.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Croissant, eggs and coffee from Farmshop at the Brentwood Country Mart. They have the best croissants in LA! The staff is so friendly and they always get me my favorite corner booth. I also really enjoy the Atrium room at Tavern, so I go for their biscuits and lemon ricotta pancakes.

What are you doing at:

7:00 AM – I like to start my day with yoga and meditation. It's good for you physically and mentally. I’ve been practicing since I was 14 years old. When I leave yoga, I feel like I can overcome any challenge I face that day.

10:00 AM - Sending emails, making calls, wheeling and dealing!

12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?

It's a tie between Il Pastaio and The Ivy. Always familiar faces and incredible food. The pumpkin tortellini at Il Pastaio is terrific. I’ve always thought I was Italian in a past life, which is probably why my favorite food group is pasta :) I’m obsessed with the ambiance at the Ivy, everything from the pink walls to the table cloths and plates, and I always order their grilled vegetable shrimp salad. Also, who doesn’t like a place that gives you a goody bag of chocolate chip cookies when you leave?

7:00 PM -  Showings can go all day, so by night I’m ready to relax and make dinner. Cooking has always been my passion, and I’ve always thought it was cool that I can eat something I made (thank you Barefoot Contessa for all the cooking tips!). If I go out, I’ll meet friends for dinner and drinks at the beach.

11:00 PM - I’m an early bird, so I’m asleep by 10pm. With that said, real estate is a 24/7 job and always about the client, so I don’t sleep until my clients do!

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Coffee, coffee, coffee! At the end of a long day, a glass of Rombauer chardonnay cures everything.

Favorite Motto:

Work hard, play hard

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Spotify. Music gets me through the day, and when you’re in the car for hours driving to and from showings, it's nice to have good music to keep you going. I’m really into the Travel + Leisure instagram account. Traveling is special and one of my favorite things to do. It’s nice to escape through photos during the day, and motivating to work hard so I can go to the places I see on there!

What do you do best?

I work well with people, and I make them feel at ease during the process. Buying a home can be very stressful and scary as it’s usually a buyer’s most expensive purchase, so it’s nice to know people trust me. I want it to be an exciting time for them, as it is an incredibly important decision that they live with (literally!) until their next move. I walk them through the process from start to finish with them knowing I’m right by their side.
