Christyn Dunning: Founder, The Guest House Studio

Born and raised in small town Pennsylvania, Christyn Dunning's passion for design stems from working alongside her father, who taught her the importance of well built interiors. She continued to pursue her love for design at the University of North Carolina - Greensboro, where she acquired her Bachelors of Science degree in Interior Architecture.  It was here that she learned how to integrate all aspects of design to create spaces that are functional but still aesthetically pleasing.  Her love for travel has taken her many places, and she has collected items along the way that makes that one place truly unique.  She believes that each persons home should do the same and reflect what makes those who inhabit it, one of a kind.  She typically finds her inspiration when she is among nature, on her travels, or with the people she meets along the way.  While her design aesthetic covers a wide range of styles, it is best described as the perfect combination of rustic and urban elements thus creating eclectic but refined spaces.  Her vast experience with Architecture, Construction, and Interiors makes her a one stop shop for anyone looking to build new or redo.  Christyn loves to spend her days by the sea listening to a good band or getting lost in a great book.  She currently resides in Charleston, SC with her favorite pooch Mr. Tiki.

What do you love most about Your City?

Hands down, the beach.  We have some many beautiful beaches and back creeks here in Charleston.  Each one is unique and I love them all. Charleston is such an active town.  People are constantly fishing, biking, or paddleboarding.  It’s just fun.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

My favorite breakfast meal is the cinnamon roll and breakfast sandwich (with a fresh side of fruit!) from The Lost Dog in Folly Beach.  If I had to choose my favorite restaurant it would probably be the Fat Hen in Johns Island.   Best place in town for fresh fish.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Trying my hardest to wake up!  Usually spending some quiet time with my dog and devotions before taking on the day.

10:00 AM – By 10am, I’ve had my coffee and the Hustle is real.  Site visits, client meetings, project managing contractors and orders, space planning new jobs, pulling fabrics, picking tile, etc. etc.

12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?

My goal by 12pm is to have all of my “has to get done” list items checked off so that I can spend the afternoon actually designing.  Doesn’t always go like that unfortunately!  Five Loaves is the best spot for a sit down lunch or meeting.  If I want something quick, I usually grab a smoothie from Blend Juice Bar.

7:00 PM -  Honestly, most days I’m lucky if I’m not still working at 7pm but if I’m not, then you will most likely find me at the beach with my dog or grabbing dinner at Bohemian Bull.

11:00 PM – Oh, I am for sure sound asleep or in the middle of a good book that I just can’t put down but desperately need to.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I need at least one cup of coffee in the am.  Preferably an iced caramel coffee from Dunkin.  I know, cheesy but man they’re good.  If it’s been a good day, I’m usually sipping on a glass of chardonnay.  If it’s been a bad day…a pluff mud from Holy City Brewery or a captain and ginger.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I use my hour’s tracker app the most to keep on schedule and track of time spent on jobs.  Instagram would be the runner up.  I love Three Birds Renovations out of Australia.  They are so inspirational and I feel like they feel my pain when it comes to Renovations.

What should everyone try at least once?

This is a hard one!  I have to say that everyone needs to travel alone at least once in their life.  Go somewhere you’ve never been and go spontaneously.  You will be surprised how many new friends you will meet and what you will discover about yourself.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

I love the mountains.  I enjoy being surrounded by beautiful nature, either in my home state of Pennsylvania or in the amazing landscape of Iceland.  It helps me take a step back from the hustle and bustle of work.  It realigns my priorities and provides me with a clear mind.   There is always something new to discover when you are lost in the woods or among the rolling hills.  It’s just breathtaking.
