From Egypt to London with countless adventures in between, the jet-setting life of photographer Nikka Lorak looks like a bright kaleidoscope captured through her lens. We would love to arrange an interview with you and this former film director and now a leading fashion photographer, successful fashion entrepreneur, and a citizen of the world. Nikka aims for timeless elegant style in her lush photography, combining it with bold colors or black-and-white contrast. From a film-directing background, she believes in the importance of storytelling in photography, which has led her to shooting major fashion campaigns all over the world, from Guess Jeans to the Royal Ballet.
After graduating from Film and TV directing Master's program in Westminster University (London), Nikka have directed and produced films, including the short film "The Outsider", which won an award in Cannes. It is a story of human acceptance. Nikka discovered cultural and social differences very early in her life. Growing up in Egypt, she had a healthy and carefree childhood: endless beaches, international school and lots of great outdoor activities. Her father, a Belgian diplomate was commissioned to Egypt and her mother, a Russian painter followed him to the country of pharaohs. As a teenager, her father sat her down and explained how lucky she was to be born into a privileged family and that such a fortunate social status implies responsibilities that inevitably come with it. She learned how important it is to give back to society. Working for Club Med in her early 20s, Nikka always insisted that the members of her team had to be paid equally, regardless of their origin. Moving to fashion photography, she sees her contribution in sharing her experiences with younger colleagues and helping with advice. She was taught the craft from Oleg Tityaev, a brilliant NYC photographer who became her mentor. She then met university professor Barry Vince who worked as Stanley Kubrick's film editor. He taught Nikka to work from the bigger picture towards the details and once being precise working on details, never lose the concept of the bigger picture.
My Goal of the Day: To accomplish what had been planned. To stay in the moment and enjoy it.
My Thought of the Day: Excited with the challenge but bit anxious.
My Action of the Day: To meditate in order to stabilize my emotions, to workout in order to clear up my mind.
My Deed of the Day: I feel great when I can help someone
My Tip of the Day: Whatever happens stay calm, confident and supportive to
those who need it.
My Pic of the Day: (any additional pic that expresses something special)
Here is the picture that expresses my very nature: a creative warrior. Romantic yet strong, multilayered yet simple. If I would choose a film character, it will certainly be Lara Croft, a strong willed, intelligent world traveler and adventurer. Picture is taken in Kenya during photographing my exhibition project Kenya: Back to Roots.
A Day in My Life:
What do you love most about Your City?
I consider myself to be a citizen of the world, however here are few of my favourite cities:
-I love Los Angeles for its landscape diversity, lots of amazing outdoors, spirit of Rock musical culture, healthy and spiritual lifestyle.
-New York taps into my business side, my left brain. I love New York’s high energy, its impatience and its greed. To me this city represents American Dream, where hard working and courageous dreamers make their aspirations become reality.
-Black Rock City. This city appears on the map only during one week in August, when Burning man festival takes place in the desert of Nevada. Nevertheless, this city lives according to the social rules that we all need in the modern society: radical acceptance, radical self reliance and full ecological responsibility. To me Black Rock City and Burning Man festival that it hosts every year are far from being just a entertainment spot. I find it to be a very educational and spiritual place.
Favourite breakfast meal & restaurant?
I love breakfast at Little Hermitage and at Mondrian hotels, Los Angeles. Both places are very young spirited and sexy. Little Hermitage is in a more authentic way, while Mondrian is more polished. The most romantic breakfast I have had in a covered in lush ivy private cottage of Chateau Marmot. Los Angeles
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – depends if I’m on set that day. If I shooting that day-I’m wide awake. My works as a visual creative includes, aside of obvious taking images, both art directors and producers tasks. I often need to coordinate the team or to fix a production emergency. So better to start early and to make sure that everything and everyone is ready for the photo or video shooting set. If I’m not on set that day, I’m sleeping until 8am
10:00 AM - With my workout accomplished, I’m getting on the emails and calls. A successful artist nowadays must also be a business person, a communicator, a negotiator, a producer and a distributor… List goes on and on.
12:00 PM - Favourite Lunch spot/meal?
I often skip lunch because I’m busy with something else that entirely consumes my attention, for example a photography project of an attempt to accomplish as many tasks during the day as I possibly can. It feels very satisfying to look back onto a productive eventful day. So usually no lunch, unless I’m meeting someone.
7:00 PM - Sunset usually will meet me at ‘in front of computer' single dinner or a networking dinner out. My perfect sunset is by the seashore or in a garden dinner/party when the candles are being lit as the sun goes down, turning a busy day into a relaxing evening.
11:00 PM - off to bed. I like planning the upcoming day. I’m guilty of living both in the past (I’m very sentimental) and in the future (I love planning). My biggest goal is to learn living at the present moment and to enjoy it before it’s over.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
Still water! As much as possible. I don’t drink alcohol, coffee or soft drinks.
Cheap date. LOL
Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?
I love following one of my favourite photographers @mariotestino. His positive and fun loving personality shines through his content. And of course I’m always keeping an eye on his work as for me he is the one of the contemporary leading branding photographers. Other account I’m often checking is VS model @romeestrijd. She is an amazing style and fitness inspiration.
What should everyone try at least once?
Just try to let go and say ‘yes’ to a new, initially scary experience. I’m proudly setting example by jumping off a plane (sky diving). Though I should not be considered a courageous person. One of my biggest anxieties is to drive on a Los Angeles highway. Guess practice makes perfect.
Where do you enjoy getting lost?
I’m mostly could be found lost in my projects and in work in general. When it comes to something I’m passionate about, I’m becoming totally obsessed. On a typical shooting day I would barely eat a lunch, just because I’m excited with the creative process. I have to put an effort to keep my lifestyle healthy and balanced. As for an actual place where I would get lost I would name Mexican Tulum. I would describe it as mystical and sensual place wrapped in lush rainforest.
