Carole J. Wacey: President & CEO, Women’s City Club of New York

My NativeAdVert:

Carole Wacey joined Women’s City Club of New York as President and Chief Executive Officer in November 2017. From the outset, she has been focused on evolving WCC to be inclusive, impactful, relevant, and innovative. Carole undertook an intensive strategic planning process–assess WCC’s history and identify opportunities to meet the needs of an evolving City at this point in our nation’s history. Carole has led a comprehensive planning process that has included a historical review, surveys of membership, meetings with key partners (past and prospective), and plans to launch our strategic plan in the fall of 2018. Carole Wacey served as Vice President, Education at WNET since December 2012, where she focused on technology, interactive media, youth development and underserved youth.

Carole served for ten years as Executive Director at MOUSE, a national nonprofit organization that empowers underserved youth to learn, lead and create with technology. She will continue to support MOUSE as a recently elected member of its Board of Directors. She has also studied public international law at Oxford University, and Leadership at Yale University. Carole was elected to the Board of Directors of MOUSE.

My NativeAdVert: (Personal and/or Career)

My Goal of the Day: My goal most days is to do good and have fun. I work with amazing people at Women’s City Club of New York, all of whom are working hard to promote civic engagement and equality in our city, so I am fortunate that I get to do good and have fun every day!

My Thought of the Day: When somebody asks how you are doing, never say “busy.”  It’s boring and doesn’t say anything about you.  Everyone is busy, so share something meaningful and make a connection with whoever is asking—presume they want to know.

My Action of the Day: Move forward!

My Deed of the Day: Offer your help to others as much as you can.

My Tip of the Day: Make a memory (or many) every day—staying present and cherishing moments makes a day worth living!

My Pic of the Day: (any additional pic that expresses something special)

WCC recently awarded New York State Senator-Elect Jessica Ramos the Women’s City Club Centennial Medal of Leadership.  I am excited to see the next generation of women providing important leadership at a time when we need it more than ever.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

What’s not to love about New York City?  I love the energy, the diversity, the richness of its offerings, the sensibilities of New Yorkers, and that it provides a very welcoming home for me and my family.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Either oatmeal at The Breslin or avocado toast at Joseph Leonard.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Starting my day with the news before my twin 4-year old boys wake up!

10:00 AM – On a weekday, I am likely meeting with someone at Women’s City Club to discuss partnerships, advocacy, events, strategic planning, communications, or a variety of other topics. The organization was founded by suffragettes over 100 years ago, and today we are moving in a bold new direction to help more women become changemakers in New York City.

On the weekend, my entire gang is sitting at the breakfast table enjoying French toast or blueberry pancakes!

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Again, it’s hard to choose just one, but either a lobster roll at Ed’s Lobster Roll in Soho or Calamari Salad at Cafeteria in Chelsea.

7:00 PM -  This is a crazy time in my house—we are usually somewhere in the process of dinner, baths, teeth-brushing, and reading before bedtime!

11:00 PM – Either chatting with my husband about the day or getting ready for bed. I spend time reflecting on the accomplishments of the day and the work that needs to be done tomorrow to advance underserved women in New York City.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)? Honest Tea half tea and half lemonade.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I like using Facebook to keep up with friends and colleagues.

What should everyone try at least once?

Skydiving—or, anything out of your comfort zone!

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

In a new neighborhood—in New York City or anywhere!

David Bloom: GM, the Small & Medium-Sized Businesses Group, Sterling

My NativeAdvert:

David Bloom is General Manager of the Small and Medium-Sized Businesses Group at Sterling, the global leader in employment background screening solutions. His team recently launched the self-service SterlingNOW. David was included in Entrepreneur Magazine's Brilliant 100 and on Business Insider’s list of 100 most interesting people in the NYC tech scene. David holds a BA degree from Bates College and an MBA from Cornell University.

My Goal of the Day: Same every day: Make my teams better and my customers happier.

My Thought of the Day: “Is this really how it works??” I am constantly amazed at the knots businesses tie themselves into and how satisfying it is to untie those knots.

My Action of the Day: Writing my To Do list. I find it super satisfying to see my day laid out on paper…and then crossing things off.

My Deed of the Day: Thank someone. Gratitude when shared spreads happiness. A simple thank you or acknowledgement of good work makes the world (and the office), a better place.

My Tip of the Day: Don’t get mad. Don’t get frustrated. Solving problems are just part of the job.

My Pic of the Day:

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City? Before Seattle my family lived for five generations Brooklyn. New York will always be my City and the thing I love most is the subway. In one car you will find billionaires and the homeless; break dancers and mariachis; new immigrants and people whose families have lived in the same neighborhood for generations. And there’s magic that happens when something truly interesting happens and you give someone a knowing smile. Only in New York.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant? On weekends I make pancakes that my family calls “daddy’s special”. They are really good, if I say so myself.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Feet hit the floor, grab the dog and go for a walk. Her name is Toasty, the result of a very lengthy naming process guided by my kids.

10:00 AM – If not in a meeting (which is often) I am probably walking around to see what is up. I especially love poking in the engineering room. I know enough to ask questions and hopefully contribute a few ideas.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal? I

have a bad habit of skipping lunch. With offices across the country and around the world meetings tend to creep onto the calendar at all hours (next Monday I have a 7am with London). But when I do get out I love the bahn mi sandwiches at What the Pho around the corner, and there is a cookie place…

7:00 PM - Home at the dinner table with the family, or at least the family not at soccer practice. Thanks to my amazing wife who is a senior marketing executive we take dinner seriously. No phones, no books, no one leaves the table until everyone is done. Even when it’s leftover extravaganza those are the most important 30mins of my day.

11:00 PM – Toss-up between going to bed and still on the couch with my laptop catching up on the day. Sometimes I get my best work done between 9pm and midnight. Does that sound sad?

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I start the day with a cup of coffee at home, which usually is only half drunk by the time I head out, and another at the office. In the evening a glass of wine or a beer. There was a time I was an evening scotch drinker but not so much anymore.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

My photo app! Usually I flip through it to see which of my kids stole it last. Their selfies are hysterical!

What should everyone try at least once?

Travel to the developing world. See life through a completely different lens.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

In front of a white board. I am a visual thinker and a white board and dry erase marker help me explore thoughts and look for connections between issues. It is like traveling in my business mind.

My Thought of the Day: Stop acting small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion. Rumi

My Action of the Day: A mindful moment with nature

My Deed of the Day: Play time with my aerial fabric hammock

My Tip of the Day: Trust the wisdom of the body. Make time to connect inward, with the deep self and the vast, rich internal world.

My Pic of the Day:

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

I love living in a small-ish city that is close to NYC. I have been spending a lot of time in NYC for work the past 5 years. Hartford has a symphony, The Bushnell Performing Arts Center (Hamilton is touring right now), museums, diverse restaurants many hiking/walking options nearby and we are big enough that Cirque de Soliel tours here!

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Includes an egg or two, with toast or over roasted vegetables. I prefer to make my own food, usually one-pot meals, warm stews, chili or soup. The Firebox is our go-to restaurant before the symphony with clean, interesting farm-to-table food.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Our dogs wake us around 5:30am. One of us takes them out while the other makes coffee. My husband and I eat breakfast together with the newspaper. After breakfast I take time with a spiritual text and some self-study. What constitutes a spiritual text is quite broad. Right now my texts are: Between the Dark and the Daylight: Embracing the Contradictions of Life By Joan Chittister and the Neurobiology of We by Daniel Siegel.

10:00 AM – On Mondays and Thursdays I am at my office with clients. Other days I am finishing up a walk, hike or time on my Pilates reformer, rushing to get ready to go to the office.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Noon is a popular client time so I am usually seeing clients. I take a half hour (sometimes less) to eat leftovers I’ve made. A hot meal is what I prefer. When I haven’t had time to cook lunch is a yogurt, which doesn’t satisfy me at all.

7:00 PM -  Finishing up with clients or teaching my aerial yoga class. I typically am working on some kind of project, planning a workshop or aerial class so once I am home I will spend an hour on this, then begin to wind down for the night.

11:00 PM – Reading in bed. At bedtime it is fiction only. I am currently absorbed in The Book of Strange and New Things by Michel Faber. Spirituality and God meets science fiction.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I start the day with 20-oz of coffee in my Contigo insulated mug, half caffeine, half decaf. I like my coffee really hot and this keeps it hot for over an hour. To get through the day I need ice water. I fill my 20-oz Yeti tumbler with ice and keep adding water to it. An ice filled mug is always with me when I am driving or working.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

My instagram account is all about the aerial arts. I only follow other aerialists. Occasionally I post nature or dog pictures on @aerial.therapist

What should everyone try at least once?

Aerial yoga.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

In the creative process: Whether I am planning a workshop, an aerial yoga/aerial acrobatics class or yoga dance class, I love the twists, turns and discoveries of the creative process and can spend hours in preparation. I find it very nourishing on so many levels.

What do you love most about Your City?

Everything! It’s the Big Apple, the city of my Long Island girlhood dreams – the city, the sights, the people, the culture, the diversity, the history, and the bright lights. It’s all here, yet I have my special spot that is my home – when I am here and not discovering other places!

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Quick is good! Ess-a-Bagel – is one, all variations but most recently toasted mixed bagel, veggie cream cheese and lox, black coffee with Czech relatives. The North Hall at Grand Central is also another to catch a croissant and coffee.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – If not traveling, drinking my coffee, checking Europe news feeds and emails and beginning to plan the day. I love this writing block of time after the initial catch-up before I need to go for a meeting or get ready for a call, etc.

10:00 AM – Varies by the day but this is a working block from 10-12 – meetings, writing or conference calls.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Michael Jordan’s at Grand Central Station for a steak salad for a special meeting. Macron Café for a quick bite or coffee. If I am writing/working on my own it is a simple salad or soup.

7:00 PM - I’m at an event or chilling with art/pop news and catching up on social.

11:00 PM – Hopefully in bed if not traveling.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Coffee black and too many.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Apps: NYC Subway and The App store itself. I’m constantly finding and using new ones. For example, I just found one for Louis Vuitton for a Cats of Instagram editorial project.

Instagram: @goodnewsforpets and @dr.evanantin for my work. See my Linked In and Facebook Live presentation from NY Vet for more on that.

Wherever there are books. Book stores, libraries, old books, new books, my own book collection. The digital world is my world now too but the smell and sights of books still make my heart sing.  These are my mind calming moments to get lost in. You put the phone aside and your mind breathes. When you are in the PR business that is a good thing!

What do you love most about Your City?

It’s never dull. There is always a new restaurant or theater opening but I love the classics too like Geja’s Café which we represent.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Yolk, 501 West Diversey. I love the classic over easy eggs with bacon and toast and they have great juices!

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Working out with my trainer, Bojan Vojcic.

10:00 AM – Usually in a meeting or brainstorming with my team.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Our office is based in Lincoln Park, and the power lunch spot there I think is Summer House, a Lettuce Entertain You restaurant.  I just had lunch there yesterday with Rob Feder, Chicago’s revered media columnist, and Jeff Hoover, a producer at WGN TV.

7:00 PM -  That varies a lot. Often, we have a restaurant, hotel or theater opening to attend or I might have a networking event. Or on the flip side, I am often making dinner for my two teenagers as we are late night dinner eaters. My daughter doesn’t like to eat until after her basketball practice.

11:00 PM – I am watching something trashy like Real Housewives and trying to wind down a bit.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

It used to be Diet Coke or wine but I am trying to be healthier these days, so sadly it is water. A lot of water.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I would have to say our Heron Agency Instagram! Our logo is red, which represents passion, and all of our images on our account have some pop of red in them. Sometimes we love a photo but if there is no red in it, we reject it. The team rotates who is posting for the day so it is always fun to open it up and see what they select.

What should everyone try at least once?

A trip to Burgundy. A day where you never get out of your pajamas. Binge watching Hitchcock films. Rutabaga.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Books, and any store with shoes or jewelry. Airports. I lose my mind just sitting in the terminal waiting for a flight. The beach.

My Goal of the Day:  Work Hard.  Be Humble. Repeat.

My Thought of the Day: Impossible is Nothing. (Muhammad Ali)

My Action of the Day:  I try to be really conscious about the small choices I make throughout the day as it relates to waste and consumption.  Things like not using a straw with a drink, using a reusable container instead of a plastic bag, etc. So many single use plastic items end up in our oceans or just make up additional waste.  I try to be really mindful of this.

My Deed of the Day: Listen.  I try to truly listen to people with an open mind.  I think it goes a long way with relationships I have with people.

My Tip of the Day: Success is often at that place just beyond where most people quit.

My Pic of the Day:

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

I love San Diego.  The weather really inspires you to be active and healthy.  While I work and travel a lot, when I do have free time the beach, mountains, and hiking are right here.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Acai Bowl, Fully Loaded.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM –  After doing a few early morning emails, I pack school lunch for my kids.  I typically do the morning drops-offs. Then when I get to work I start by setting my intentions for the day and verifying my schedule.

10:00 AM - Client Meeting - Typically working through strategy on a website project or marketing campaign.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Beach, trail, or gym.  I typically workout at lunch to break up the day and re-energize myself for the afternoon.

7:00 PM -  Finish up my work at the office and try to get home to read stories and tuck in my kids.

11:00 PM - Finish up work / check emails and try to get to bed before midnight.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?  I do a couple cups of coffee each day.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Evernote helps keep me organized.  I rely on a lot of lists.

What should everyone try at least once?

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Big Sur.  It’s the most beautiful stretch of coast I’ve ever seen.  Epic hiking, good surf. Paradise for me.

Kyle and Liam Alexander: Filmmaking Duo

Our NativeAdVert:

Filmmaking duo Kyle and Liam Alexander are working are launching their documentary Stroke of Genius, where they have interviewed people who have overcome life-changing, traumatic medical events. They have documented 9 individuals from New York City, Nashville, Austin, Denver, Palm Springs, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Seattle. They are hoping to use their online momentum and strategic partnerships to create an Internet based video platform for people to share their own story to enrich the lives of others.

My Goal of the Day:

    • Liam: Get through 80% of my to do list…

    • Kyle: Make one person smile, since it rhymes with Kyle :)

    • Liam : Wow, I just got so trounced by Kyle’s goal of the day!  Haha, mine is so lame *adds to to-do list “come up with better goal of the day”.

My Thought of the Day:

    • Liam: Today, this is my thought;  “If you don't say it, it does not exist.  Don't hide it.  Don't play it over in your head.  Have the conversation out loud with the people who matter and do it today! “

    • Kyle: When I wake up in the morning I think about what person I can connect with.  I am sharing and learning something new in this world with each person I connect to.

My Action of the Day:

    • Liam: Gee… my action? I take so many different actions all day long, included but not limited to: talking, walking, writing, organizing, thinking, creating, painting…

    • Kyle: Everything that there is to accomplish.  Without action, nothing gets done.

Our Pic of the Day:

What do you love most about Your City?

    • Liam : We are spoiled rotten in NYC!  Literally anything you want is available at any time of the day.  Need a Lion at 12:30am?  No problem.  Whenever I travel I am just reminded of how spoiled we are.  You would not imagine the profound lack of availability of Jamaican beef patties at any hour of the night in other parts of the world.

    • Kyle: There is something different around every corner, and yet you can find everything you need to live the rest of your life in one neighborhood . Coming from SoCal, I have yet to find good guacamole.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

    • Liam: I eat the same thing for breakfast almost every day; egg whites, avocado, jalapeños, and cabbage in a bowl with hot sauce. #breakfastofchampions  I have one main diet rule: when you are by yourself eat ridiculously lean. (veggies, egg whites, cottage cheese, organic trail-mix, apples, no dressings, no sauces) This way when I go out I can eat whatever I want and I don’t have to even think about it. I never experience “food remorse” and never second guess myself at a restaurant or out with friends.  Curly fries!  Burritos!  Hook it up!  Favorite Restaurant: The Cottage in Union Square #IfYouKnowYouKnow

    • Kyle: Right now, avocado toast with a poached egg on top.  But I make the best pancakes. My all time favorite restaurant is The Little Owl in the West Village.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM –

Kyle: Waking up and re-checking my to-do’s that day.

Liam: God Bless you Kyle, you will NOT find me up at 6am.  You will find me fast asleep dreaming

Kyle: That’s probably why I end my day before you!

Liam: LOL

10:00 AM -

    • Liam: 10am each day we have our #StrokeofGenius morning meeting.  Whether we are in the same room or across the country on a conference call; in a group, or just Kyle and I, we start every meeting the same.  We go around in a circle and each of us share:

1 -  The most impactful moment in our life from the last 24 hours.

2 - Three things we are grateful for.

    • Kyle: It changes your thought process and you can actually create possibilities for yourself and others who are engaged with the conversation.  It sets you up for success, and with a to-do list a mile long sending us working into the night we not only need coffee, but the right positive mindset.  Gratefuls and sharing impactfuls have to be one of the best things we have implemented into our work and life.

    • Liam: Yeah it really grounds us, and also orients us as a team everyday.  Through this practicewe get to know each other better.  This ritual has changed my life.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

    • Liam: I don’t really have lunch, mostly I just eat trailmix.  Coast to Coast Trailmix is my go to lunch.  But I read once in this book (I believe was written by Oprah’s assistant) that Oprah never had a meal without someone influential present.   She always took power lunches. That sounds amazing to me.  If I had lunch, I would do that.

    • Kyle: Liam doesn’t really have lunch, but I venture out because I know the balance of nutrition.  Now, I bring a lunch, like a salad or I try to eat something healthy to give me energy for the rest of the day.

7:00 PM -

    • Kyle: Mondays I’m usually starting a game of basketball at 7pm lasting until 9:30pm.  Any other day of the week I am having dinner meetings, drinks, networking, building relationships, Thursday Art Walk in Chelsea, finishing my to-do list for the next day or hosting the organization that I am a part of, “House of Genius”.

    • Liam:  Usually at 7pm I’m returning to the Office/Studio.  I have a routine that I go to the gym in the evening, workout and also meditate, take a steam, and relax.  Its kind of awesome because it completes the day for me.  Then I get back into the office around 8/9pm and I can return to a project with fresh eyes, or work on a new art piece with freedom and ease.

11:00 PM -

    • Kyle: I try and finish my work by 8pm so I can either reflect on my day and/or set changes for tomorrow.  By 11pm I try and make it a habit to watch a documentary 2 days a week.  Or I will spend my nights catching up with family and friends over a glass of wine before bed.

    • Liam: Maybe on a date… but… usually in the studio.  Actually 10 - 12 is one of my favorite times to work on creative stuff.  I’m usually feeling accomplished and free after a complete day and I’ll just be kicking it in the studio doing whatever.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

    • Liam: Seltzer Water! Saratoga Seltzer Water or Vintage is my jam.  I drink it all day and all night.   Also, Cafe Bustelo is life.  A Cafe Bustelo sponsorship would change my life.

Kyle: 2 cups of coffee in the morning, 1 Chef V green drink or fruit smoothy on my way to     work, 2 cups of tea in the afternoon, and 1 small cup of afternoon jo.  In between, I like to have glasses of water.  I usually end my day with a glass of wine and tea.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

    • Liam: According to “Screentime” my most used app is “messages” LOL  Actually, I am extremely watchful of my app usage and phone time, until the new Iphone release I had a parent control app installed on my phone to lock me out of using most apps.  Wait, that’s my favorite app!  Screentime!  On the new Iphone OS, it shows you how much time you use on each app, and allows you to set time limits.  I love that.  Life happens out here, in the world, with people, call me, lets go do something!  I don’t use apps, I have no alerts, I get no notifications, I don’t have facebook installed, time limit on my instagram, my brother Max said it best: when it comes to social media “Don’t scroll, strategic plan your face off!”

    • Kyle: My favorite Apps have to be Headspace and ESPN. My favorite IG accounts - I love spending time on @shareyourstrokeofgenius and engaging with our community. Other than that, I love IG quotes.

What should everyone try at least once?

    • Kyle: Skydiving. Been 3 times. You don’t even know you are falling, and the feeling when you first leave the plane….I’m going to leave that to you!

    • Liam: Try everything once, Try everything twice damn it!  People are so scared and people always go to the grave regretting the things they don’t do.  Take that risk, call that person, take the leap.  You will be ok.  In fact, you'll be better for it.  ….and Skydiving OMG +1 Kyle.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

    • Kyle: I love getting lost in a new neighborhood, especially when I am late or trying to make a meeting on time.  Why?  Because then I have a story to tell, an honest story, which generally excuses my tardiness and brings a fresh air to the environment in the meeting.  It’s like going on random locations with a date, having no destination in sight, ending up at a supermarket, laughing at spontaneous things about life, all while loving how the night actually ended up.

    • Liam: I love that Kyle, +1 +1 I’m always lost.  I have a commitment to discovery and living in discovery.  That’s life.  When you’re not lost it’s a surefire sign you’re not challenging yourself.  If you feel like you’ve got everything figured out, take a hint from Kyle and go get yourself lost.

Michelle Cleveland: Hairstylist & Entrepreneur

My NativeAdVert:

Michelle Cleveland began her career in the beauty industry as a manicurist but quickly fell in love with doing hair. Her goal was to have the salon not only deliver beautiful hair but also help educate clients how to recreate their looks in the comfort of their own home. She wanted to create a space that was artistic where both the stylists and the clients would feel important and inspired. She has a long list of celebrity clientele, specifically including Christina Milian and Angie Martinez. Whether you’re working in front of a camera or a stay at home mom, every one of her clients is treated like a celebrity.

My Goal of the Day: My goal for each day is to be productive. Even when I’m not doing hair, I try to accomplish as much as I can each day.

My Thought of the Day: GRATITUDE.. As soon as I open my eyes each morning, I take a breathe and give thanks to God for waking me up for another day!

My Action of the Day:  DELIVERING KICK ASS HAIR!

My Deed of the Day:  SEE ABOVE AND REPEAT!

My Tip of the Day: BE KIND. It costs nothing & will never fail you.

My Pic of the Day: (any additional pic that expresses something special) My husband & son are my world. Without them none of what I do would have meaning.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City? Location location location!!  Central NJ (to me) is perfectly located an hour from two major cities (NYC & PHILLY) with mass transit to both. We are also close to 5 major airports and as an added bonus we have some of the best beaches and boardwalks in the summertime

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I’m a jersey girl to the core so without hesitation.. A PORKROLL, EGG & CHEESE SANDWICH usually at FAST BREAK RESTAURANT, which is another family owned business located right next to my salon.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Having my first cup of coffee in silence! My day gets hectic so I choose to start it off quiet and slow.

10:00 AM -  seeing my first client of the day.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Being a hairstylist means lunch is a luxury usually spent standing in a break room but when I can get out hands down my number one spot is XINA RESTAURANT for the best sushi I’ve ever had!  Also:two words...MILK PIE!! You’ll thank me later..

11:00 PM - showered, laying in bed answering all the emails & text messages I’ve missed throughout the day.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)? Coffee for sure when I wake and maybe another around 2:00 pm if I can squeeze it in. I try not to have any caffeine after 5:00pm so at night I keep it simple with water.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account? Instagram is my go to App. It’s simple, easy and effective.  When I can’t sleep I troll as many hair accounts as I can. Jen Atkin & Mane Addicts are two of my favorite since I can usually grab one or two tips on hairstyling just from watching their videos!!

What should everyone try at least once? Traveling alone!  It used to intimidate me when I first started in the industry but I realized just how much it’s helped me grow as a person.

Where do you enjoy getting lost? I don’t!  I suffer from a combination of anxiety and OCD so when I don’t know where I am I tend to panic a bit. Even when I’m traveling in a city I’m not familiar with I only explore with the help of GPS & an Uber driver!!

My Goal of the Day: To try as hard as I can to leave the world better than i found it every single day.

My Thought of the Day: You can't do anything alone, so find partners.  At the same time, don't wait for others to start.  Get out there and lead.

My Action of the Day: Connecting.  Above all connecting.

My Deed of the Day: Supporting other filmmakers.  I feel an intense responsibility to look after not only my own work, but to support the work of others who might not have the access and privilege that I have.  So I spend a lot of time doing as much as I can to help other filmmakers.

My Tip of the Day: I have never, ever regretted a decision I made that required either courage or generosity.  Everything might not always have worked as I'd have wished, but even when that happened, something good always ultimately resulted.

My Pic of the Day: (any additional pic that expresses something special)

Jimmy Carter, 90+ years old, building a house for someone else.  Not asking for applause, not gaining anything from it whatsoever.  Just doing the right thing right up until the day he keels over.  That's my plan.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

I love that my city, New York, is a big bubbling stew of people and art and ideas and politics and business.  Everybody is either there, or has been there or wants to go there and when they get there everything speeds up.  New York is my non stop injection of adrenaline and joy.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I am not a big fan of breakfast.  I usually eat it out of necessity.  Le pain Quotidien is right by my office and has great avocado toast which wards off hunger for hours.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Oh my god is anyone really awake at 6???

10:00 AM - Hopefully I've finished my work out and most of the email that came in overnight and early in the morning.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Usually having lunch meeting and it changes locations all the time.  Big salad with some protein.

7:00 PM - If I'm lucky, I'm having dinner with one of my kids or a friend or my husband.  But more often I am somewhere I have to be.  Meeting, conference, airplane, fundraiser.

11:00 PM - Trying to unwind.  The problem with my addiction to adrenaline is the unwinding.  I usually read a novel or something till I fall asleep.  If I'm being dumb and compulsive, I'm on email again, trying to catch up on all that came in over the day.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

I apologize that it is Diet Coke, but I try to keep it to one or two a day.  Beyond that it is sparkling water with a little bit of cranberry juice and lime.  If you put it in a martini glass you look like you are celebrating with a cosmo.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

Twitter.  I don't know why I love Twitter. It kind of brings the worst out in people.  But I love the occasional snark.  My favorite account is @floridaman

What should everyone try at least once?

I am tempted to say scuba diving, but that's not very realistic for everyone.  I do think everyone should try to learn an instrument at some point in their lives.  I didn't take piano lessons until I was in my forties, but I learned so much about music, even if I'm a terrible piano player!!

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Two places.  Bookstores.  And cooking stores.

7:00 PM - Work is on hold, dinner is finished, homework is complete and I get to be just play with my kids before bedtime.

11:00 PM - Intermittently checking emails, catching up with friends from afar on social media and watching YouTube tutorials on growing lavender, while trying to stay awake. Pretty much everything people who write books on efficiency say not to do.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Morning: Chai Tea Latte - I really want to like coffee, but I just can’t do it.

End of Day: Water!... or a glass of red wine.

She worked at 72andSunny for years and I’m so inspired by what she’s creating and the impact she’s having on young women who have physical differences - from confidence building to physically climbing mountains. There’s good in the world - let’s support it and promote it!

It is a wonderful challenge to lead this heritage Grand Hotel into the future. Esther and I respect the spirit of Suvretta House which opened its doors in 1912. It was built by Swiss hotel pioneer Anton Bon and has remained in the Candrian-Bon family to this day.  It is exciting for us to continue to keep the traditions alive and to create new and innovative experiences for our guests. My Tip of the Day: Ask for what you desire.

My Pic of the Day:  This was taken at Boston Museum of Fine Arts and it is a Dale Chihuly glass sculpture.

Depending on the sun and time of day it radiates a deeper and brighter light. I was there on a snowy day, so bad they closed early. However, I went to various rooms, and then would walk back and look at it. I only had my cell phone, so I couldn’t capture its complete presence, but I felt a sense of wonder looking at it.

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about living in Metro Detroit, Michigan?

I can walk to most things, the store, Starbucks, and the downtown area.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

When I’m home I eat a banana and have two cups of black coffee. A few times a year, I’ll eat a New York City bagel with lox and sip on French pressed coffee. That’s my favorite “treat” breakfast.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Two mornings a week, I’m doing strength training with a trainer. The other days I wake up around 6:30, and meditation is the first thing I do.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

Lately, I’ve been making these kale salads (I know, cue eye roll) with butternut squash, beets, garbanzo beans, quinoa, carrots, tomatoes, avocado, no dressing. And I have an apple for dessert. I love being able to be at home most days for lunch, and I use that time to catch up on emails while I eat.

7:00 PM -  Once a week I work in the evening. I have clients on the west coast that I coach by telephone (and I’m on East Coast time), so I usually work until 10:30 PM once a week.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

More than 8 cups of water, 3 small cups of coffee, and in the evening I love to sip on The Republic of Tea’s Ginger Peach tea. All their teas are splendid but Ginger Peach is my go- to favorite.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I have three-  I love Katie Couric. She is super smart and her photos are creative, informative, and fun.

About 18 months ago, Katie was so kind and generous with me. We met for an hour in New York City, just one – to – one. Before we met in person, Katie interviewed me (via an online Yahoo interview) when my book launched, and she did the interview in the most thoughtful, sensitive way. She shared a part of her heart with us in talking about her (late) husband Jay, and I think she is brave.

My dear friend and mentor Dr. Deepak Chopra always seems to post things to awaken your consciousness.

Rod Styrker has a new Sanctuary app for all those who are seeking calm, strength and wellness. I highly recommend it.

Indian-born Radha Bharadwaj is an award-winning feature film writer- director. Bharadwaj has finished filming feature film, Space MOMs. The completed film, which Bharadwaj wrote and directed, will debut to the world in early 2019. Bharadwaj’s screenwriting and directing feature debut is the psychological suspense Closet Land. Her screenplay won the Nicholl Screenwriting Fellowship, and participated in the Sundance Screenwriting lab. The film starred Alan Rickman and Madeleine Stowe. Oscar-winning director Ron Howard’s Imagine Entertainment produced the feature, which was released by Universal Pictures. My Thought of the Day:  Is gratitude for my amazing husband, mum, sister, friends—and the animals I live with and encounter.

My Pic of the Day: (any additional pic that expresses something special)  I’m directing my script for Space MOMs, my feature film on India’s successful 2014 Mars Mission.  I’ve been working on this project from 2014. When I finished filming, I learned that some powerful Bollywood Boys’ Club players are embarking on something that sounds awfully similar to my film.  They had (unauthorized) access to my script.  I am suing them for copyright infringement.  Wish me luck: my victory would be one for all content-creators. #WeToo: (WE: Writers’ Empowerment).

A Day in My Life:

What do you love most about Your City?

I love how small San Francisco feels. It’s like a cozy enclave where everything is within arms reach. The city has grown exponentially since I came here nearly 30 years ago from New York, but it hasn’t lost its character, its friendliness, its familiarity.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

Three eggs over easy with a side of bacon and green tabasco hot sauce. And, a ton of coffee. Sam’s in Tiburon has been a favorite for years. It’s outside on the marina so you’re looking out at boats with a corner view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Angel Island. Plus, they have great bloody marys.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – I’m either at CrossFit or sleeping. I go four days a week and let myself sleep in until 7 am on my off days.

10:00 AM – With few exceptions, I’m in my office having a conversation. 10 am seems to be the most popular meeting time of the day.

12:00 PM - Favorite Lunch spot/meal?

I’m a fan of the sushi boat restaurant just around the corner from our office. It’s got that traditional river with boats where you grab whatever you want. You can walk in the door and be eating in 4 seconds. It’s weird, fun and fast.

My Pic of the Day:

7:00 PM -  Sitting at the dinner table with my family. Being home with my family for dinner has been one of the most important aspects of my life since I became a father. I drop everything to be at that table.

11:00 PM – Asleep. CrossFit transformed me back into an early morning person. Sleep makes a huge difference in how I show up in my job and life.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Coffee. It’s on a timer and ready when I wake up. My wife and I split a pot of coffee before I head to the office. I’ll have more 2 cups at work but go caffeine-free past 11 am.

I end my day with a glass of Beaujolais Nouveau during the holiday season. It’s the wine I got to drink on special occasions when I lived just outside Paris as a kid. My Dad used to have a barrel delivered to the house before Thanksgiving - which was right around my birthday - so it feels nostalgic.

What should everyone try at least once?

Jumping out of a plane. I took my son skydiving for his 18th birthday. I went from sheer terror to being suspended in the sky. The feeling of freedom is bizarre and exhilarating.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Being lost is not something I’m comfortable with. Luckily, I have a great sense of direction (and GPS in my pocket).
