My Native Admission Statement: Though I started my career at 13 as an actress and have continued acting to this day, my true mission is as an advocate for mental physical and emotional wellness. Having come from an incredibly celebrated and prolific family that suffered from addictions, trauma and mental illness which lead to physical problems back in a time where no one knew the correlations of body- mind connections. My mission is to help others to realize that total health is a balance of everything you do from the water you drink to the thoughts you think. My mission, along with my life partner, Bobby Williams, is to create a curriculum that teaches people how to live in every aspect of what that means from the physical to the mental and spiritual.
Bio: Mariel Hemingway is considered an expert in health—both mental and physical — and is a longtime advocate of personal power, life balance, authenticity, joy and finding peace of mind through a devoted practice of healthy living. She’s both a committed teacher and student in this holistic concentration. In 2014 Mariel co-executive produced the Emmy-nominated Running From Crazy, a rich and evocative documentary about the Hemingway family, collaboration with Oprah Winfrey. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and documents her boundless advocacy for mental health awareness, the dignity and rights of people of all circumstance and ability, and her commitment to connecting those of like mind and heart in order to optimize their lives in the best and worst of times. In May 2015, in alignment with National Mental Health Awareness month, Regan Arts Publishing released two new books including her memoir, “Out Came The Sun” and a young adult targeted diary form project about the journey from surviving to thriving, entitled “Invisible Girl.
In 2013, Mariel co-wrote the book, Running With Nature, wherein she and her life partner Bobby Williams share their insights about the import and impact of nutrition, meditation, mindfulness, movement, silence, the beauty of simple living, compassion for self and community, and staying a student of life at all ages. Mariel’s best-selling book, Finding My Balance, is an honest and inspiring story of her life’s journey through the lens of her personal yoga and meditation practices. Her second book, Mariel Hemingway’s Healthy Living from the Inside Out is a how-to guide to finding a greater sense of balance and meaning through self-empowering techniques and strategies. Her 2009 cookbook, Mariel’s Kitchen, offers creative gluten and sugar free recipes and was one of the first to shine the national spotlight on the benefits of this type of diet and lifestyle.
Mariel is a regular keynote speaker at conferences, conventions, and on academic panels where those of like mind and heart gather to educate, engage, entertain, and to enrich each other’s experiences. She is also an educator for Prime My Body, an organic hemp oil designed to reduce inflammation and stimulate the immune response. How did you get into the industry?
I started my advocacy work after having written my second book Mariel Hemingway’s Healthy Living from the Inside Out. After writing that and a cookbook, I then made a documentary that I co-produced with Oprah on my family and their mental health problems( along with their spiral towards suicide), called Running from Crazy. The film was released at Sundance in 2013. I soon began speaking around North America, sharing not only my story but my realization that a focus on the balance of mental and physical health is one and the same.
Any emerging industry trends?
The truth is that there is still a lot of stigma around mental health, suicide and addiction. But that is rapidly changing as celebrities are speaking out about their own suffering of depression, anxiety and addiction. So that is is changing. What isn’t widely discussed is how important lifestyle is to the health of the mind. This is a trend I strive to get out to the masses.
Any industry opportunities or challenges?
There are always challenges in dealing with mental health issues because people are afraid of what they don’t understand but as Bobby and I believe and say, “We all suffer from mental illness at some points in our lives, whether it is the loss of a loved one or dealing with the repercussions of someone in our lives being physically sick. When people are diagnosed with a disease it causes horrible depression and despondency for those that are sick and often for their close caregivers. We have to embrace and acknowledge all forms of mental illness so that we can address it in a healthy manner. No one shuns the person with cancer, or heart disease, or diabetes we have compassion and empathy for them. We try to help them but we have fear based reactions to mental illness and that needs to change, and that will happen when everyone realizes there is a path to recovery. It is not the same for everyone because every human and is unique and different.”
Inspiration for the business idea, and your vision for the Business?
We are creating a program through the Williams Hemingway institute and measuredrisk.com and Before it’s too Late foundation (soon to be launched on line) that teaches about the mental and physical balance that we ALL need to achieve but that will be different for each individual. We want to teach about eating real food (unprocessed, organic, not abused proteins etc) and how simple that truly is, about how good water is extremely important to our health. Meditation, prayer and mindful movement can have a profound affective on everything in our lives. How getting outside barefoot is an important healing tool. And how healthy dental care affects the physical and mental health of everyone. And finally exercise, how moving your body is crucial to anti aging and mental wellness.
What's next for the Business in the near future?
Health and wellness is a billion dollar industry and that is not going to change because people want to be well. What does need to change is the trends or the fads (that lead to loss of funds with no results) and the necessity to understand the simplicity of healthy life style choices and it’s affect on our daily life. Part of my mission is to have others realize our personal responsibility to our own health. No one can take a magic pill and be cured of anything. The magic comes from the ability to take responsibility for ones wellness and make changes, and choices accordingly.
Ideal experience for a customer/client?
I feel that the best experience people would have is by being guided towards eating well, learning meditation and mindfulness and grounding (literally putting their feet on the ground to free their body of inflammation), having the experience of how Nature is a healer in their lives and a guide and being able to take that knowledge home and implement it into their lives affecting not only their own health and happiness but the health and happiness of their families.
How do you motivate others?
I believe that we all have a story and that given permission to tell it is the fist step in creating successful solutions to a balanced healthy life. I tell my story which allows people to tell their own and start the process of recovery. I motivate, I hope, by acknowledging that we all come from something, that things have happened in all of our lives that we need to share so we can lift the shame of it and by doing that we create more responsibility and that ultimately leads to joy.
What do I do best?
It has been a process to learn this but listening has become one of the best things I do. Every human on the planet wants to be heard not judged, not given a solution, simply to be heard. If we all could become better listeners we could all become better people. My grandfather Ernest Hemingway said, “When people talk listen completely. Don’t be thinking what you’re going to say. Most people never listen. Nor do they observe. You should be able to go into a room and when you come out know everything that you saw there and not only that. If that room gave you any feeling you should know exactly what it was that gave you that feeling.”
What makes me the best version of myself?
What makes me the best version of myself is when I take full responsibility for who I am being in every moment and sometimes that is to acknowledge that I might be a scared little girl who felt invisible at some times, and that acknowledgment can pull me out of a habitual place into a place of awareness and empathy instead of reaction or defensiveness.
My Biggest Success?
I think the best things that I have done are the simple things that have nothing to do with awards or acknowledgments from the outside. They come from being in a personal relationship with myself and my partner that has enabled me to become a better listener. Those two relationships have taught me to be responsible for everything I do, think ,or feel even when what I think or feel is unkind… the awareness of whatever i think feel or do helps me to change. Bobby has been a tremendous guide to me, not by taking over in my life but by giving me the space to see myself so that I can stand solidly on the ground and be the best person I can be.
My Most Challenging Moment?
Leaving my marriage of 24 years was the most difficult thing I probably ever did because I left before I was truly able to acknowledge that my own happiness mattered. It affected my daughters though they were 18 and 20 and made me feel guilty for a long time. But it allowed me to find myself and love myself. Sometimes my choices didn’t serve others’ desires and that was a challenge for me to accept . Now years later I am a stronger and happier person for it.
