Pavel Muntyan: Founder of ToonBox

My NativeAdVantage:

I was born in Moscow in 1978. When I was a kid, I wanted to paint church icons, to be a punk musician, to create UFOs or to make cartoons. After I finished school, I managed to pass entrance exams to the International University of Moscow and graduated ahead of schedule (my initial plan was to study in Moscow Architectural Institute but I was late for the exams). My life was connected with the bureaucratic system only for a couple of years as I was working as a copyrighter for the Mayor of Moscow, and then I decided to start my own business. My first project was a web-studio, but unfortunately I did not succeed with this venture. The next one was selling mobile phones and it also failed. Then my brother and I started a company to devise and produce electronic roulettes for casinos. And that turned out an extremely positive experience. You know, it is quite a challenge to be a millionaire when you just reached 24. It was a period of doing meaningless things, spending time and money just for nothing: buying useless yachts and other things I did not need. Then one day everything turned to dust when Russian Government decided to ban gambling in the country. We were trying to re-organize our business, but the results were poor. It was 2008, a year of economical depression in Russia, and I found myself with nothing in my pockets and a two-months-old kid in the family. I had to decide what to do in the future. The best decision was to start making animated movies. Can you even imagine this dumpy person who is on the edge and decides to make cartoons?! Somehow I was absolutely sure about it. At the moment I have been in this business for 7 years. I know how it works, I know what to do, I know what to wait, I know how to produce high quality 2D cartoons. And trust me, they are the best on the market.

What’s Your NativeAdVantage:

What do you do best?

I am a perfectionist. As a person you cannot make anything in this world flawlessly. You always have to restrain yourself from making everything best of the best and leave it as just simply the best. It is quite a challenge to stop optimizing everything all the time!

What makes you the best?

My two main partners are perfectionists too. Vova and Michael can argue with each other for several days and after all that hustle change just one phrase (or even one word) in the whole movie, because all of us think that even one small fly can spoil the ointment.

How will you become the best?

I don’t care about success in the long run. I know for a fact that tomorrow our company will be better than today, and each day we make it better and better with small steps. All the big things in this world are made with the very small atoms. All the atoms of our studio are made with special care and attention.

What are your aspirations?

Personal: Now I live in Cyprus. Several months ago me and my friend Sergey de Rocambole decided to build a huge system of labyrinths here. I found a place (1600 m2 were provided to me for free by a local landlord), we have already made the markings and I hope to make the real artistic cultural monument here. I’ve started to learn marble processing to decorate the whole monument construction with mosaics. I know that it could take 3-5 years to finish, but I am used to working with long-playing projects.

Business: We have one very popular show — Mr. Freeman. The problem of this show is its local nature - its black and white character who blew up the Russian speaking Internet three years ago. There are huge fan-clubs in Greece and Poland with hundreds and thousands of non-Russian-speaking people who were impressed by the subs. This character is a philosophical type, he is a way to look inside yourself. We really want to make an English version with professional dubbing in Spanish, Portuguese and French. I hope we can do it anytime soon. But the main challenge for me now is to make the show with the same impact for young kids. It should teach, help and protect kids, but it shouldn’t be very emotional and dynamic. It’s not an easy thing to do. But I know that one day we will do it!

What fascinates you?

“Mad Max: Fury Road” and “District 9” are the best motivations for me. I think that these two movies are absolutely perfect. After I watched them for the first time, I exited the cinema hall, bought another ticket and watched them again. I want to make movies which never make you boring for even a second. You have to feel the suspense all the time.

Elon Reeve Musk. Each generation has its own Titans. We are very lucky! We had Steve Jobs, we have Richard Branson, Sergey Brin & Larry Page, and we have Elon Musk. Several Titans at the same time! I admire these people, but Elon Musk is the person who moves humanity forward and makes the world definitely better. I really love it!

Verona — the place of love. When I came there for the first time, I was living in a camp on top of the hill and the whole old town was under my tent. Every evening I was listening local guitar players, drinking rosé and walking around the ancient buildings.

Israel — the center of the world. This is a country with an ideal balance of religions and nations. Christians, Muslims, Jews and others live under one roof and shoulder-to-shoulder. I am afraid to think what can happen if this balance is ruined.

Cyprus — my new lovely home. I came here because of my son. We found a very good school for him and one year later me and my partner decided to move the whole company to Cyprus. It is semi-wild and semi-modern. The atmosphere here is really friendly. All the streets are covered with fruit trees. I feel really protected and comfortable here.

Tesla Motors — the car I wish to buy in the nearest future. I like the idea of it, I am a fan of its design, my kids always ask me when I am going to get it. This is the first car ever that I really want to have.
The Amazing World Of Gumball — animation show that always makes me shocked, happy, surprised and fascinated. I didn’t understand the first two episodes because they were too weird for me. But now I know everything about this world!

Sex! I love sex and I think that sex with ardor and passion is one of the most powerful things in the world that can break very strong social constructions. Sex gives me pure energy, it helps me solve unsolvable problems and move forward even when the whole world is against me.
