Kevin Allison is the host and creator of the wildly popular podcast, RISK!, where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share. After starting from scratch in Kevin’s bedroom in 2009, RISK! has grown to have over 1 million downloads per month and has featured stories from Margaret Cho, Kevin Nealon, Andy Dick, Sarah Silverman and regular folks from around the world. Kevin is also a member of the legendary sketch comedy group The State, whose 90’s MTV show remains a cult classic. In 2011, he created storytelling school The Story Studio, where he teaches performers and professionals from all fields how to wow a crowd with their own true stories.
What do you do best?
What I do best is tell true stories, and help others to tell their true stories as well.
What makes you the best?
Being able to listen with empathy to other people as they tell their stories helps me to ask them the right questions that pull the real emotional juice out of their stories. It also helps me to become a better storyteller as well, because I become more familiar with what others might want to know about my emotional processes while telling my stories.
How will you stay the best?
Becoming the best requires constantly doing the work. I need to constantly perform my stories, work on them with others, work on others' stories, and stay connected to the storytelling community.
What are your aspirations: business & personal?
Personal: I'd like to feel more and more like I've helped other people.
Business I'd like to feel that my work has affected more and more people.
What fascinates you?
What fascinates me is the whole idea of stripping away masks and figuring out who we are. It's an infinite process. You take off one mask and realize there's another one beneath it.
