Jon Burgerman (b. 1979, UK) is an award winning purveyor of doodles. Burgerman references and playfully questions popular culture in his work through humour and arresting, colourful visuals. His work has an instantly recognisable aesthetic that exists across a multitude of forms including canvases, large scale murals, sculpture, toys, apparel, design, print and people (as tattoos and temporary drawings). His artworks are collected worldwide by several institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Commercial collaborations include work with Nike, Puma, Samsung, Pepsi, Coke, Levis, AOL, MTV and Rip Curl. Burgerman lectures about his practice at universities, festivals and events all over the world. He encourages mistakes, 'quiet interventions’, experiments and unexpected occurrences within his practice to allow for improvisation and new ways of making. It's Burgerman's belief that through playful, creative acts, Art can act as an agent to change the world, by being the catalysis to allow people to change their worlds. www.jonburgerman.com
What do you do best?
Waste time, doodle, distract others and make up stories and games.
What makes you the best?
Nothing makes me the best. Am I the best? I’m only the best at being myself. I’m on a constant quest of improvement. I do this by reading, thinking, dancing and inking.
How will you stay the best?
By being open to suggestion and chance and mistakes and misfortune. You do have to work hard. Nothing really good comes easy. But hard work is not enough, you have to have an open attitude. I think it’s important to be flexible and fluid with your ideas and even your idea of yourself.
What are your aspirations: business & personal?
I want to be happy making other people happy. My personal and business aspirations are the same. Things have to be sustainable and non-disruptive for the environment and those around me. I seek freedom in my work and life, and the opportunity to engage others in what I do.
What fascinates you?
Space and the bottom of the ocean. We know so little about what’s above and below us.
Reduce, reuse, recycle.
My friends, my brother Alex, Jimi Hendrix, Matt Groening, Yoko Ono, Harry Kane, the journalist Jon Snow.
New York, Nottingham, Berlin, Amsterdam, being inside when it’s raining heavily outside.
Pens! Pencils! Paint! Clean white paper!
Nature, cooking, dreaming, scheming, walking, talking and making things and seeing how people respond to them.
