What do you do best?
That’s a really tough question. I suppose I am best at just being me. Existing…, if that makes any sense. I sell. I’m a salesman. I create. I make things. I effectively communicate and affect decisions. I also listen. I look at problems and try to find the simplest and most convenient solutions. Simplicity is the core of good product design. I think it’s also the core of good business. I view my creations as interactions with people through various mediums (right now text.) People over-complicate things. I try to simplify, because I want simple.
What makes you the best?
I’m not the best. Anyone who tells you they are the best is either a liar or ignorant of their own limitations. I can say that I’m very good at what I do. I may be one of the best but I know there are people out there that can still teach me a lesson. When I was young, my rifle coach impressed humility on me. Even though I was one of the top shooters in the state of Virginia, he let me know there would always be someone out there who was better. This mindset keeps me humble, and also helps me deal with temporary defeat. If you know you can’t win every time, and accept it, then it’s easy to dust yourself off and jump back in the ring after being knocked down a notch. This is the mentality of an athlete. What you lack in ability can be countered with persistence. You only fail when you quit.
How will you stay the best?
By never giving up. I stay in the game, execute the opportunities I am presented, and stay humble enough to learn from others. I believe that fortitude, humility, and action will cause a person to naturally rise to the top of any industry or organization. Those are the character traits of a good leader.
What are your aspirations: business & personal?
Personal: I want to be admired by my children and be of service to society. I want to leave a lasting legacy and make some meaningful contribution towards humanity. That is how you achieve immortality. You live on in the minds of the people you have helped. The greater your contribution, the longer your memory lives. Those are my greatest personal aspirations.
Business: I want to build a brand and company that takes on a life of its own and grows larger than myself. After I accomplish that, maybe I’ll run for President of the United States. Anything is possible in my future. I’m excited to see what happens in life.
What fascinates you?
People fascinate me. Just people in general. Their hopes, fears, vices, and virtues. Call it the psychology of mankind. I love marketing because of the psychological aspects of consumer consumption. Whether it is durable or non-durable goods. Even ideas. What makes people buy products and services or subscribe to ideologies? Why do some governments or companies fail while others flourish? What makes people feel emotion or act on those emotions? How do people interact with products, organizations, and amongst each other? And finally…How can a person or organization affect those consumers and their decisions in a non-obtrusive manner? How do society’s leaders shape reality. These are the things that fascinate me.
