Lois Van Baarle: Digital Artist, "Art of Loish"

My NativeAdVantage:

I'm a digital artist and animator located in Utrecht, the Netherlands. I've been drawing since the day I could hold a pencil, and started teaching myself to draw digitally in 2003. Although I was born in Holland and have dutch nationality, I've lived all over the world, including the United States, Indonesia, France and Belgium. Ever since graduating from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2009, I've been working as a freelance artist, doing mostly concept art and character design.

What do you do best?

I'd say that's digital art! And more specifically, digital painting and female character design.

What makes you the best?

It's always been my passion and I invested a LOT of time into making these types of drawings when I was a teenager. Because I put so much of my heart and soul into these drawings, I developed a unique and recognizable style which became my area of expertise.

How will you stay the best?

Continuing to do what I love despite all the pressures that having art as a career brings with it. Right now that means keeping enough time free each year to draw for my own enjoyment, and not just doing client work all the time.

Biggest success?

As of now, that would be my "Art of Loish" Kickstarter, which has generated an immensely enthusiastic response and is almost 90% funded - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1022149620/the-art-of-loish-a-look-behind-the-scenes.

What are your aspirations?

Personal: My long-term aspiration is to own a beautiful home that I truly love. I've moved around a lot and really long to have a place that I can settle down in and is really my own! As a freelancer it's quite complicated to become a homeowner so this might present a bigger challenge to me than to others.

Business: My aspiration as an artist is to be able to live off of my own art, and no longer have to accept client work. Right now I need client work to make a living but it would be amazing if I was able to live off of print and book sales, and be able to invest all of my time into personal projects.

Most challenging moment?

When I started out as a freelancer, I truly had no idea what I was doing. I knew how to make artwork but had little experience with professional clients or the technical aspects of running your own business. The learning curve was very steep and it was a difficult time, but I got my act together!

What fascinates you?

I'm a very visual person and I'm fascinated by the beautiful things I see in my daily life - nature, fashion, aesthetic beauty.

Favorite Motto:

It's all relative.

Favorite People:

My boyfriend first and foremost (Arjen Klaverstijn - arjenklaverstijn.com), and his and my family.

Favorite Places:

Utrecht (where I live) because it's the place I know best and has a fascinating history, and also the most beautiful place I've ever been, Yosemite.

Favorite Products:

Anything by Wacom! Without these products I wouldn't be who I am today.

Current Passions:

Digital art is always my passion, and next to that, I'm passionate about hiking, jogging, and travelling. I'm also intensely passionate about my favorite movies and films and could rant on about why they are amazing for hours. Right now that would be 'Show me a Hero', an HBO miniseries.
