In April 2015, Xavi Vega was appointed General Manager of Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa, a luxury spa and thermal springs property spread across 900 acres of protected natural reserve just outside the small Costa Rican agricultural village of La Fortuna. Vega’s responsibilities at the resort include financial management, sales and marketing strategy, and overseeing daily operations.
The seasoned hospitality professional brings 18 years of industry experience to Tabacón, having managed an array of five-star resort properties across Europe, Central and South America. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in tourist business administration in his native country of Spain in 1998, Vega began his career as assistant general manager of a local boutique hotel and member of Hesperia Hotels – part of the NH global hospitality chain, which includes more than 375 resort properties located across 39 countries. Over the course of a decade, Vega worked his way up within Hesperia to eventually become general manager of the brand new World Trade Center Hotel in Venezuela in 2008. While working with Hesperia he also earned a master’s degree in hotel management from Barcelona’s Escuela de Adminitración de Empresas.
From 2009-2014, Vega managed five-star Derby Hotels Collection properties in Spain and France before relocating to Peru where he helmed Starwood’s Paracas Hotel, a South Coast luxury resort and spa that caters to affluent clientele with 120 guest rooms and private villas. In spring of 2015, Vega’s passion for tourism and his love of Costa Rica’s immaculate natural environment drew him to the country’s lush northern region, home to Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa.
What do you do best?
I create a positive atmosphere to offer the best possible travel experience where both guests and employees feel safe, confident and relaxed.
What makes you the best?
My ability to listen and understand people.
The opening of the Banke Hotel in Paris. It was formerly an 1890’s bank building and turning it in a hotel was really a challenge, especially with me being the new kid in town in a highly competitive market. We found the right staff and everything flowed from the very beginning, which is not common in hospitality openings…it was truly an excellent team.
What are your aspirations?
Personal: Always and unconditionally be there for my family and friends.
Business: See a smile on my guests faces and offer them the best vacation experience so they’ll want to return to Costa Rica and stay at Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort.
Most challenging moment?
Everyday is a challenge. Never give up.
"Good luck is just the meticulous attention to detail."
Anyone who live and let live.
Paris, Bangkok and a beach in Trinidad y Tobago that I do not want to share with anyone except my wife.
Nike shoes, my Mac and Lacoste shirts.
I read constantly. I also love to spend hours at the beach watching the sea, feeling the sun, and touching the sand.
