Abbie Galvin is owner of Katonah Yoga Bowery. She has been honing this practice for the past 25 years and has a strong student-base from all around the world. Abbie's instruction is informed by her own creative process as a filmmaker and from her exploration of the therapeutic process as a psychoanalyst. She has learned over and over that truly participating in any formal process of self-exploration leads to transformation whether it be physical, psychological or intellectual. Her goal is to engage students of yoga in the dialogue between their conscious and their unconscious selves because it is through that effort that we potentiate ourselves. It is her intention as a teacher to cajole each student in that most rigorous effort to be grounded, to grow upwards, and to participate in the creation of their best self.
What makes you the best?
Knowing that I’m not the best makes me a tolerable person.
What are your aspirations?
To raise ethical and successful children, to find joy in my daily doings, and to inspire my students to fulfill their longings.
Finding a best friend and mentor in Nevine Michaan 20 years ago and helping her disseminate this powerful material, stirred me to create a platform for teaching students to renovate, renew and redirect their bodies and their lives. But my most succulent success is being Mommy.
Most challenging moment?
The most challenging moment, which has reoccurred in my life from age 5 to this moment is the epiphany that I have to be, despite being a twin, having a mentor, and knowing love, is that ultimately I have to be my own anchor, teacher, warrior, beacon. That terrible and awesome moment of recognition when I am most afraid and most alive.
Bend your knees and stick your ass up.
Those in my life with whom I am my most authentic self, who love me despite my bluntness and other quirks and with whom I can truly share this operatic journey.
My apartment, my sister’s apartment, the inside of my car, London, Earth Café, Isle Au Haut
Master Hou’s face cream
Oil of Oregano
My favorite fashion line, Shosh New York, the coolest of the cool.
Signature of all Things, Fiddler on the Roof, making a film, writing my book, being close to my nephews, doing my practice, singing Joni Mitchell songs with my sister, wearing Shosh New York, and mentoring, always. It uses every piece of me.
