Camila Carmichael is the 18 year old designer behind Camila Swimwear. The brand is designed and produced by Camila, which is pretty impressive as she is currently matriculating through college and working on obtaining a fashion degree. Her mother Zamara Carmichael uses her business and accounting background to wear the hat of the business manager for the brand and help her daughter's dreams become a reality. This brand has heart in more ways than one. Camila Swimwear is helping to create change by supporting the local (Florida) foundation "Share The Stoke", a non-profit charity that builds a greater good within our community (getting kids off the streets and into the ocean). A percentage of proceeds from each swimsuit purchased from camilaswimwear.com goes to the Share The Stoke Foundation. This young Latina is definitely one to watch.
What do you do best?
I feel like I'm very good at being able to see every aspect of the situation and brainstorm ideas. I delegate tasks very well and get the job done!
What makes you the best?
I have the best of both worlds. I come from somewhere where it isn't easy to bring new ideas into the world and grew up in another world where everything was readily available. From that I am able to think outside the box and keep moving forward.
What are your aspirations?
Personal: I strive to be the best person of myself and be completely at peace with who I am as a person.
Professionally: To create a brand that I am proud of showing to the world and seeing others truly love and enjoy my products. I would love to see my own store in the future!
I would have to say my independence. I am only 18 and living on my own in a completely different country with my own line on the way! It's terrifying yet so satisfying to watch myself grow and learn.
Most Challenging Moment?
I remember telling everyone the news that I was moving to another country and having everyone question my decision and doubting my skills. I would always have second thoughts, but then I realized that it was exactly what I wanted to do and from then on I stopped having people put me down and I fought for what I believed in. There were a few people in my life that told me I wouldn't make it and I would want to move back after a few months or a year and it really hurt to have people so close to me doubt me.
I always loved a quote by Warsan Shire that says "you are terrifying and strange and beautiful; something not everyone knows how to love." This quote really stood out to me because it a constant reminder to me to love myself. Not everyone is going to like you and that's ok.
Favorite People/Role Models?
Personally: Catherine Warriner. I love how detached from materialism she is, and how compassionate and sincere she is.
Professionally: I admired those self-made business people who created successful enterprises with hard work and swear.
A few of my favorite destinations are:
I love buying new art supplies! I love having weird cool new pens and pencils! It's quite odd but I love having small things I can use everyday nearby, especially since I'm very artistic and love to doodle everywhere!
Currently I am working on redecorating my apartment! I love finding inexpensive DIYs that make the most of my space and show my personality!
