Chase Quarterman: Assistant Professor of Design/Advertising at the Art Institute of Austin & Design Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin in the School of Journalism

My NativeAdVantage:

Chase Quarterman is an Assistant Professor of Design/Advertising at the Art Institute of Austin and a Design Lecturer at the University of Texas at Austin in the School of Journalism. For the past 13 years his creative career has included such areas as freelance design, art direction, illustration, portrait painting, art gallery management, comic book art and education.  He received his BS degree in Graphic Design from Mississippi College and MA degree in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin.  In 2009, he started teaching and has had the pleasure of instructing design courses at four central Texas universities: The Art Institute of Austin, University of Texas at Austin, St. Edward's University & Texas State University. Currently, he is working on an MFA in Communication Design at Texas State University.

Outside of teaching, he continues to actively maintain a graphic design freelance business and create paintings for collectors and galleries.  His art has been collected all over the country and is part of the permanent collection at the Mississippi Museum of Art.

What do you do best?

I really love teaching, being creative and studying aesthetics.  Students often hear me say that achieving a good sense of aesthetic taste requires a huge visual appetite.  Take it all in…the good and bad.  Book covers, paintings, illustrations, newspaper layouts, billboards, t-shirts, sculptures, album jackets, etc.  By promoting the importance of observation in the design classroom, the critiques of student work become richer.

What makes you the best?

I’m blessed to have support from my wife, kids, parents, sister and in-laws.  I grew up in a household that encouraged creativity and gave me an endless supply of paper to draw on.  I want to do the same for my children.

What are your aspirations?

Be a better dad, create inspiring work, become a better “creative cheerleader” for my students and find more time to read.

Biggest Success?

Professionally:  Just finding my “calling” in the form of teaching.  I stumbled into it, but I absolutely love it.  It took me several years at a desk to realize that I needed to surround myself with a creative community that actively discusses creative topics.  Academia is fertile ground for discussion and experimentation.  Nothing beats showing up for work and talking about a subject that excites you.

Most Challenging Moment?

I was once an Adjunct for 4 different universities at one time.

Favorite Motto?

“The way to get started is to stop talking and start doing.”  Walt Disney

Favorite People?

Outside of family?  Ray Bradbury, Carl Barks, Charles Schultz, Marc Chagall, Paula Rego, Hayao Miyazaki, Walt Disney, Stan Sakai, Alfred Hitchcock, Timothy Keller, Peter Howson, Humphrey Bogart and Willem de Kooning.

Favorite Places?

Ireland, Spain, Israel, Texas and Mississippi.

Favorite Products?

Holbein and Charvin oil paints.

Current Passions?

Right now I enjoy researching the history of graphic design.  A few months ago, I sat down in a reading room at the Harry Ransom Center and leafed through an original copy of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer by Kelmscott Press from the 1890s.  It was one of the most beautiful examples of typography I have ever seen.
