Sasha Nelson is a yoga instructor, wellness + lifestyle consultant, and sustainability enthusiast based in Brooklyn. She supports communities and individuals to integrate wellness practices into their modern lifestyles. An avid traveler, she seeks to discover and introduce yogic principles and practices in the form of food and culture worldwide, currently through Mindful Morning events and Goddess Brunch. Sasha is committed to an earth-conscious lifestyle from the food we eat to the products we purchase and the way we live. A former Fashion Merchandising MFA graduate from Academy of Art University with an emphasis in eco-friendly fashion, she also collaborates with brands who stress the importance of sustainable and fair-trade initiatives. Sasha teaches vinyasa-style classes that incorporate a clear attention to the breath, alignment, and thoughtful execution. She applies yogic principles of sthira (effort)/sukha (ease) through sequences that challenge strength and dedication, while encouraging playfulness and appreciation for showing up exactly as you are. When you don’t find her doing any of the aforementioned she is experimenting in the kitchen, studying Ayurveda, taking hip-hop classes in NYC, and exploring new places.
What do I do best?
I don’t necessarily think that the things things I do are the “right” way to do them, or that I do anything “better” than anyone else, but I do feel pretty good about doing these things: yoga, cook, connect people, make friends, dance, eat delicious and nutritious food, find all the delicious healthy/local/artisanal restaurants, travel, make cards, health-ify recipes.
What makes me the best version of myself?
The qualities, practices, and people that make me the best version of myself: the study of yoga and meditation, the deep well of self-care knowledge I learn from Ayurveda and nutrition, a passion for sustainability of mind body and planet, self-inquiry and general curiosity, compassion for the planet and the human race, a never-ending quest for peace in my own life and a motivation to share that with the world, an endless amount of excitement for travel and exploration, the ability to connect with others and meet new people, a lifetime love for dance and movement, the ongoing support of my family and friends.
What are my aspirations?
Personal ambitions and desires: travel as often as possible for work and pleasure, enjoy music and art, eat really well, take care of the planet, explore new and familiar places, connect with others, spend time with the people I love, learn always, learn Italian (one day…), to have fun and enjoy this life.
Business ambitions: teach around the world to spread my love for yoga and wellness, cultivate a global community and collective movement to spread the health through yoga classes/events/retreats and Mindful Mornings with my co-host Aditi Shah, to hang out with Oprah or Ellen (or both), to backup dance for Bruno Mars (a girl can dream).
My Biggest Success?
Traveling around Europe freshly graduated from high school with a friend without losing anything valuable, being able to pay my bills as a yoga teacher/wellness entrepreneur in NYC, thank you notes and positive testimonials from students and clients from doing the work I love, leading my first solo retreat last year in Costa Rica (also happening February 2018!).
My Most Challenging Moment?
Moving to New York after a heart wrenching breakup with undergrad/grad school debt and a very low-paying job, and having to crash with very caring friends until I got my footing, then transitioning into a yoga/wellness career not long after. I learned, among many things, that there are teachable moments in every experience - no matter how uncomfortable - and that anything is possible if you believe it is and keep going.
Spread the health.
“People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don't even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child—our own two eyes. All is a miracle.” - Thich Nhat Hanh
My Favorite People/Role Models?
My parents and brothers - artists, travel lovers, smart and creative and caring people. My teachers - Anya Porter, Nikki Costello, Colleen Saidman Yee and Rodney Yee, my fellow passionate and engaging Kula Yoga Project teachers. My friend groups from different stages of my life [middle school, high school, college, grad school, dance]. My yoga community. My besties since childhood - a group of 6 of us that still spend a weekend in Catalina together with our mothers every summer since age 12. My Mindful Morning co-host Aditi Shah, and my first wellness industry sidekick in NYC Ksenia Avdulova (founder of Breakfast Criminals), among other incredible women I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and working with here. My Ayurveda mentor - Chef Divya Alter.
