Paul Sinsar: Author

My NativeAdVantage:

Bio:

Paul Sinsar was born in Danbury, Connecticut, on September 11, 1950. He ‘prepped’ at Danbury High School and received an A.B. from Princeton in 1972. After graduation he moved to New York City and began a career as a bond trader. He and his wife lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for twenty years, and spent another twenty in Denver, Colorado, where their daughter Katherine was born, and died. Presently they reside in Monterey, California. Sinsar began writing after the death of Katherine. He is the author of the Ur Legend Series.

What do you do best?

In my career as a bond trader, I believe I was best at Risk Management. As a writer, I think I am best at creating human connection and a subtext of Philosophical inquiry.

What makes you the best?

As a Head Trader, my talent was identifying downside and never taking a position that would cause me to sustain a loss that would be unrecoverable and beyond my ability to recoup.   Also a good lesson in life.  As a writer, I would not feel comfortable identifying myself as the ‘best’ in class. But I believe one of the reasons I tackle the issues I do is that I like to ‘think about the world’; something we all should do more of. And despite the fact that the ‘way to my heart is through my brain’, like my hero Jaq in the novel Sun Valley Moon Mountains, I believe I have some talent for creating connection between and among my characters.

What are your aspirations?

As a ‘senior’, although an ‘old man with young hair’, sometimes it feels as if sand is slipping through the neck of life’s hourglass at an accelerating rate. However it’s never too late to dream. And I will be gratified and humbled if people who have suffered a devastating loss can gain some comfort in the way my Heroes in Sun Valley Moon Mountains, Kate and Jaq, dealt with personal tragedy.  They were Stoics. And that’s okay. As Lao Tsu said in theTao te Ching: ‘Nature does not play favorites. She regards her creations without sentimentality.’

Biggest success?

Why, convincing Linda, my magnificent wife, to marry me!

Most Challenging Moment?

Our daughter Katie’s birth, life and death.

Motto?

To be able to say, as Horace did in XXX of his Odes, Book 3, “Exegi monumentum aere perennius”: I have completed a monument more lasting than bronze. My Ur Legend Series may never be a well known ‘monument’, but it will outlast me!

Favorite People/Role Models?

Julius Caesar, because he always endured the hardships of his troops. something I’ve tried to do with my traders over the course of a career.

Muhammed Ali, because he was not bashful about his talent and took a moral stance he did not have to take, enduring vehement criticism and harm to his career.

Alan Shepard, because he represents a moment of extreme optimism in American history.

And I have to mention Martin Luther King and Gandhi. I am a Utilitarian and could never have sustained the abuse they did. But they accomplished more for more people than any others in the 20th century through non-violence. Amazing.

Favorite Places/Destinations?

A river teeming with trout. Sun Valley Idaho.

Favorite Products/Objects?

My books are my most precious possessions.

Current passions?

Passions? Why my wife, Linda, is at the top of the list! And then there is skiing, Nordic and Alpine, biking, writing and singing.
