Betty Cantrell is best known for representing the State of Georgia as Miss America 2016. As only the second Miss Georgia to ever take home the title of Miss America, Betty began her year of service as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a partner with the USO. At the Miss America competition, Betty performed the Italian Aria “Tu Tu Piccolo Iddio” from the opera Madame Butterfly and continued to perform over 200 times across the United States and abroad throughout her year as Miss America. She now lives in Nashville with her soon-to-be husband, business manager and security, Spencer Maxwell. Betty has now come out with her first album called “Nicotine” (available on iTunes and Spotify), is a motivational speaker, does hair and makeup tutorials on social media and continues her close work with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the USO.
What do I do best?
Singing is something that I have always felt that I could do better than most! Singing has always been my passion and I’ve always worked extremely hard on making my voice better and better. I entered many competitions growing up and would always win. This helped to prove/validate to myself that singing was truly my gift from God.
What makes me the best version of myself?
One of my best characteristics is that I have always been very down to earth. I have made it a point throughout my entire life to stay humble and never forget how blessed I am. I am always able to laugh at myself which is something, that I think helps keep me so happy in life, no matter what happens. My parents have instilled these traits, since I was a little girl, so now as an adult I am able to not only be the best “me” that I can be, but I can always see the best in others.
What are my aspirations?
My personal goals: Get married to Spencer Maxwell, the love of my life (April 13th, 2018). Have children (hopefully one boy and one girl). Live comfortably and happily somewhere out in the country in either GA or TN. Continue building and strengthening my relationship with God. Keep an active and healthy lifestyle.
My Career Goals: Get signed with a record label in Nashville. Become a household name as singer. Write as many original songs as possible. Continue with my motivational speaking. Work very closely with the Miss America Organization, in order to build it back up to its full potential and once former glory. Become the face of a makeup line. Continuing my philanthropic work with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and the USO.
My Biggest Success?
I truly believe that I have had many great accomplishments in my life, but if i have to name just one, then it would be September 13, 2015 when I won the title of Miss America. That was not only the greatest accomplishment of my life, but also the greatest honor and biggest stepping stone toward all of my future career goals. I couldn’t be more thankful for having been chosen out of 51 other extremely beautiful and qualified young women. I felt extremely humbled to represent them, the state of Georgia, and my country during my year of service as Miss America 2016.
My Most Challenging Moment?
Very recently some awful news came out about the leadership of the Miss America Organization, including some horrifying leaked emails about some former Miss Americas, from our ex CEO and President of the Organization. Having all of this come to light was very validating and freeing for me as a former Miss America, because there were things that I experienced during my year as Miss America, that I have been forced to keep quiet about, in fear that I would be blackballed by the leadership of the organization and that they would try to sabotage my career (because they did sabotage the career of another Miss America who was mentioned in the leaked emails). It was very difficult for me to do, but I decided that in light of the leaked emails and everyone seeing the leadership of the organization for what it truly was, that I should do an Instagram live and tell the world about some of my more challenging experiences as Miss America. I could finally explain to the world what I had been going through. I knew I needed to stand with my Miss America sisters and demand the resignation of anyone in a leadership position who was involved with these nasty emails and anyone else on the board who sat back and allowed it to happen.
This isn’t really a motto, but everything that I live by comes straight from the bible, and this is one of my favorite verses...
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
My Favorite People/Role Models?
I have always felt that it is important to have real life role models in your life as well as celebrity or career role models. In my life, I have always looked up to my parents as role models. They have always been so successful in their lives and have given me and my siblings absolutely everything. I hope to have that same impact on my children. As far as my career role model, I’ve always idolized Carrie Underwood. I love the positive message she sends out with every song she sings. She is a wife, a mother and a household name in country music. I hope to someday accomplish all of those things as well!
My Favorite Places/Destinations?
Although I’m unapologetically a home body at heart, I have had the privilege of traveling to some pretty amazing places. A few of my favorite places I’ve ever traveled include: Switzerland, Colorado and Hawaii! I had some really incredible experiences in those places and those trips created some of my favorite memories.
My Favorite Products/Objects?
I absolutely love makeup!! some of my favorite makeup products/brands include: Telescopic mascara by L'oreal, Tarte Shape Tape concealer, Too Faced HIghlighter and Laura Mercier setting powder!!
My Current Passions?
Currently in my life, I am planning my dream wedding with my fiance Spencer Maxwell, I’m in the works of getting a record deal in Nashville, I’m working on my own reality youtube show about my life, I’m filming makeup tutorials and I’m continuing to perform and do motivational speaking at events across the country! I’m so passionate about all of these exciting things happening in my life and I feel so thankful and blessed for everyone who has helped me get this far!
