Chi Zhang, Kevin Gu, and Chongwu Du: Owners, Yaso Tangbao

Started by three childhood friends from Shanghai — Chi Zhang, Kevin Gu, and Chongwu Du — in 2015, Yaso Tangbao is a fast-casual restaurant inspired by the vibrant flavors and swift service of Shanghainese street hawker fare. They have since since opened three locations in NYC and garnered acclaim from The New York Times, New York Magazine, Thrillist, and other outlets for their simultaneously authentic and inventive cuisine.

What do you love most about Your City?

The people! Just the number of people and the diversity in NYC makes for unlimited possibilities.

Favorite Meal?

Of course, home-cooked Shangahinese food! Otherwise, any kind of shellfish.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM – Just waking up!

10:00 AM – Usually at the office, catching up on paperwork.

12:00 PM – More paperwork…

7:00 PM -  And more paperwork!

11:00 PM – Finally home, hopefully reading. For Chi, he’s usually in the middle of a bestselling novel (he recently finished The Underground Railroad and The Rags-to-Riches Life Story of Alibaba Founder Jack Ma) or an Asian classic. Kevin loves reading about photography and Chongwu reads books about startups, such as The Innovator’s DNA.

Favorite Drink?

Scotch for Chi, Chinese tea for Kevin, and iced tea for Chongwu.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Chi says he would love to get lost in Hawaii and Kevin says Tokyo, while Chongwu prefers to get lost closer to home in Shanghai.
