Kayden Phoenix is a Chicana Writer and Director from Boyle Heights, California. She received a full ride academic scholarship to Loyola Marymount University where she acquired a BA in Business Administration, with an Emphasis in Marketing. Upon entering the industry, the first thing she noticed was the industry dominated standard- complete with character generalizations. In response, she became a huge advocate for diversity both in front and behind the camera, giving a voice to stories untold. Kayden plans on evening the playing field for the under-represented through her unique and diverse filmmaking. “A big part of my life’s purpose is to give voice to stories as multifaceted, atypical, and diverse as the people we find in the real world.” Kayden is the founder of Chicana Director’s Initiative, a recipient of Panavision’s New Filmmaker’s Program, guest host on National Hispanic Media Council’s radio show, and proud mentor of Latino Film Institute's Youth Cinema Project.
What do you love most about Your City?
I’m born and raised in Boyle Heights, CA. I LOVE my community. There’s so much culture and security living here. You can stand in line for the market and there’s a 100% chance the person in front or behind you will turn around and say a quick joke. Then they carry on their way. East Los Angeles gives a sense of “home”, whatever borough you’re in.
Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?
The Pantry in downtown LA. My grandparents used to go every Sunday morning, if I was up early enough (6am), I’d tag along.
My fave breakfast is oatmeal with walnuts and brown sugar, side of toast.
What are you doing at:
6:00 AM – Hopefully sleeping peacefully. Most of the time though it’s the time I wake up.
10:00 AM – On the computer. After I reply to emails I go back to writing my screenplay.
12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?
Gracias Madre in West Hollywood. Absolutely anything there- always start with their guacamole.
7:00 PM - At an Alliance of Women Director’s or Women in Film event. These organizations have the best filmmakers, support, and genuine direction I can ask for. From ALL the members. I’m fortunate to be around such amazing filmmakers.
11:00 PM – If I’m lucky, I’m inside the house on my computer typing my script. If not, staring at the computer with final draft open and taking care of tomorrow’s errands/emails.
What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?
I drink cold brew almost twice a day- morning and after lunch. My nightcap is always water.
