This Emily Carr University Alumni (Vancouver, BC) creates unique, intention-based artwork on canvas, by illustration, and through the lens. Ingeniously, Kristina Benson fashions this artwork onto fabric for the dynamic female form. Her pieces come to life in visual harmony connecting spirit, soul, and stories. Her intention has always been to inspire others to be the canvas of their potential.
What do I do best?
What I do best is inspire women to be the canvas of their own potential. I do this through creating pieces of artwork that have positive affirmations and intentions. I then design this art onto leggings, capris, kimonos, scarves, tops and headbands as wearable art. I have an innate ability to be inspired by what I see around me visually, and what I hear, and then translate this into beautiful artwork. I am a visual artist and have created a company that taps into this creative gift each and every day!
As a graphic designer with a breadth of experience and knowledge, I excel at many types of design. I love being able to take an inspired quote or scene in nature and transform these parables into a relatable art form that women can wear.
What makes me the best version of myself?
What makes me the best version of myself is perseverance and patience. I am learning each and every day how to be more comfortable with being uncomfortable and stepping into the unknown. Lastly, doing my best to say ‘yes!’ to opportunities that come my way. I am a seeker of knowledge and understanding, and I do this with an open mind. Continual self-growth has been key in my journey, and these positive intentions are seen throughout my artwork.
What are my aspirations?
My hope is to inspire millions of women to be the best version that they can be. My customers connect with my pieces. Creating these beautiful leggings, kimonos and scarves, that women can easily purchase online, makes this art accessible to everyone and at a reasonable price point.
When women are inspired to feel unique, beautiful, and most importantly loved, this positive energy affects their family, their connections, and their community.
After taking a Yoga Nidra course, we were challenged to come up with our true guiding light and inner purpose. Through the exercises we did, I was able to tap into that inner place. I heard my purpose come through very clear, “To share my love through creating and connecting with others.”
My Biggest Success?
When I look at my life from a wider perspective, my biggest success is the fact that I’ve been able to follow my creativity and turn it into a career. Being able to merge art, yoga and loving intentions into kristinabensonart.com has been very fulfilling. I can now use my skill set, my journey of faith and commitment to self-growth in a way that has a positive impact on others. More recently, I was nominated for the Mayor’s Gala for the Arts Award: Artist of the Year; featured on CBC; and accepted as an emerging designer to showcase my wearable art at Vancouver Fashion Week, March 2018. A lot has happened in the last year and a half since launching my company.
My Most Challenging Moment?
One of my most challenging moments was when my father passed away just before I was going to complete the final and fourth year of Design at Emily Carr University. It took all my strength to have that inner perseverance, stay in school and continue my studies. Because of that decision, I am where I am today.
My personal mantra is from one of my favorite authors, Marianne Williamson, “…as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.”
I do my best to live by that motto.
My Favorite People/Role Models?
Wayne Dyer (author and speaker), Hillsong United (musicians), Louise Hay (author and speaker), Marianne Williamson (author and speaker), Jesus, Casting Crowns (musicians), my mom, and friends and family. I could make a very long list of role models as I am so blessed to have so many amazing people in my life, but these are a few that I often listen to when needing some guidance.
My Favorite Places/Destinations?
My favorite places to go are places that I feel calm and grounded. Often this is a calm walk through the forest, a snowy path, or a friend’s house where we can share in laughter and good stories. I also love being visually entertained such as going to a Cirque du Soleil performance or a good concert.
My Favorite Products/Objects?
My favorite products are my own yoga leggings, kimonos and scarves.
My Current Passions?
I have quite a few passions. The most obvious one I use every day is art. I enjoy acrylic painting, illustrating, and photography. I love being physically fit when I have the time throughout the year including running and hot yoga. Another passion is cooking. Creativity in the kitchen brings me so much joy. I love co-creating in the kitchen and creating gourmet healthy meals that nourish not only the body but also the soul. Connecting with friends and family is very important to me!
I just have to add one last thought for those who serendipitously read this article. One thing I’ve learned is that your body always ‘knows’ and your spirit always ‘knows.’ Through my life, I have often not listened to that inner voice, whether it was very quiet or very loud. We get busy with who we need to be not necessarily who we are destined to become. When you start listening to that voice, amazing things can start to open and happen for your life.
