Lindsay Nicholas holds certificate degrees from Parsons School of Design in Fashion Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology in Image Consulting. Every piece she designs incorporates her understanding of quality fabrics, fit and construction. Lindsay is a former board member of the Association of Image Consultants International and also was the Executive Director of Marketing for The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, one of the top luxury malls in the world. Lindsay’s appreciation for luxury craftsmanship is evident in her designs. Her clothes aren’t fast-fashion; they are timeless pieces you’ll covet for years to come. Now living between NYC and Melbourne, with regular stops in Singapore, Boston and Sydney, Lindsay still embodies the global lifestyle and her perspective certainly impacts not just logistics, but also her eye for design and ability to anticipate what women may be missing in their closets. She has a team of mostly women who are experts in their field and an all-female production team in NYC who bring her designs to life, with insightful input from a seasoned fit model.
What do I do best?
I think I am good at getting the best out of other people. I like to find people’s potential and then encourage them repeat and enhance behaviors that make them stronger.
What makes me the best version of myself?
I am not afraid to fail. I truly believe that if you don’t fail from time to time, you’re playing it too safe and not taking risks. Without taking a risk, you can’t innovate. I also don’t believe that failure is the opposite of success; rather, it’s a stepping stone toward success.
What are my aspirations?
My personal aspirations are always around having a happy life. I think of my personal life and my work life as completely intertwined. I don’t “shut off” work at the end of the day; I keep thinking about it in an excited way…creating designs in my head, or working through a business challenge. I also don’t shut off my personal life during my work hours. A friend may pop in to my head and I’ll call that person for a catch-up, or I might just feel like heading out for a walk on the river in the middle of the day. Because I live one life that isn’t divided between work and play, I can use my time where it feels best in the moment.
My Biggest Success?
My biggest success was starting my company. While we’re still very much in a growth phase, starting this business is something that I have wanted to do for many years. Success, for me, was walking away from the safety I had in a long career in advertising and marketing and stepping in to the fear of the unknown. We’ve had some amazing wins this past year, like showing at New York Fashion Week one week shy of our first anniversary and we feel very optimistic about the future. I think success is not just the end game; it’s also the process of getting there.
My Most Challenging Moment?
About seven years ago, I moved to Australia, and a few years later to Singapore. Leaving the city I loved (New York) was difficult because, as most New Yorker’s know, the city becomes like a friend; a friend with a strong personality. I think my time outside of the US has given me a broader perspective and a definitive point of view. I now design for the global woman; a woman who travels between time zones and hemispheres. My brand is what it is because of this experience. I am fortunate enough now to live between New York City and Australia, and I live the life of my customer.
Enjoy your own life without comparing it to that of another
My Favorite People/Role Models?
I love strong women in business; they are my celebrities. I have met Diane Von Furstenberg briefly two times, and she is dynamic and personable. She’s certainly someone I greatly admire for her strong point of view and her business acumen.
My grandfather has also had a major impact on my life. He loved his work (he was an educator) and he never judged people. People say that they treat everyone equally, but my grandfather really did…deep down in his core…think that everyone’s voice should be heard and everyone’s opinion mattered. His students loved him because he listened intently to their thoughts and ideas.
My Favorite Places/Destinations?
I live between New York City and Melbourne, Australia…and recently moved from Singapore, so my favorite place to be is where my husband, my best friend, is! I, of course, am impressed by some of the amazing places I have visited, like Angkor Wat in Cambodia and I can never get enough of Paris, but sometimes it’s who I am with more than where I am that makes a place special.
My Favorite Products/Objects?
I do love beautiful things! I have several Hermes Scarves and they are works of art. I am also a crazy list maker, and I love my Tiffany & Co. Diary. I was given one as a gift in 2017 and the line spacing is just perfect to keep my handwriting nice and neat. And it has great maps of different cities and a NYC subway map. When I went to get my 2018 version, it was sold out! I scoured the world to find it, and thankfully I got my hands on one, but not until February.
My Current Passions?
My passion is actually my business. I am so fortunate to be doing what I love that it never feels like work. I love creating the designs most of all, but I also love working with my team and solving business challenges. Every day is different. For down time, there is nothing I like better than curling up on the couch with a glass of wine and a great fashion magazine.
