Kayden Phoenix is a Chicana Writer and Director from Boyle Heights, California. She received a full ride academic scholarship to Loyola Marymount University where she acquired a BA in Business Administration, with an Emphasis in Marketing. Upon entering the industry, the first thing she noticed was the industry dominated standard- complete with character generalizations. In response, she became a huge advocate for diversity both in front and behind the camera, giving a voice to stories untold. She plans on evening the playing field for the under-represented through her unique and diverse filmmaking. “A big part of my life’s purpose is to give voice to stories as multifaceted, atypical, and diverse as the people we find in the real world.”
What do I do best?
I learned a long time ago that I’m highly adaptable. It’s really a great hidden talent. I think that’s why I’m calm and easy-going- I’ve learned to survive in any environment. I mean enjoy people and all experiences either way, but I appreciate the attribute.
What makes me the best version of myself?
Reality makes me the best version of myself. Things that I can’t directly change in the world pushes me further and makes me work harder. The hard work creates movement, which in a bigger world is change. If you can have someone ask “why not?” whereas before they just accepted an injustice, then you’ve created movement. A spark. A change, however subtle. So, the truth creates the best version of myself. All the god and bad.
What are my aspirations?
My aspiration is to create positive change and growth. In a personal and business sense. I’m an equalist, on all fronts whether it pertains to me or not. Equality. Representation. Diversity and inclusion. I aspire to attribute to all of those.
My Biggest Success?
My biggest success is always the finished product of a project I’ve worked on. Once you see the end credits roll, you know you’ve successfully collaborated with a collective with the same mindset and goal. And that’s a success no matter where the project lands.
My Most Challenging Moment?
I’m happy to say I don’t know. I hope I’ve had it and haven’t noticed what it is. Ha. I like to grow from each situation so I tend not think of something as “challenging”.
“The rising tide lifts all boats.” Always turn around and bring your community with you. Why wouldn’t you?"
My Favorite People/Role Models?
Dolores Huerta, Linda Ronstadt, Patty Jenkins.
My Favorite Places/Destinations?
The beach at night is always a great destination. Any beach. (But particularly ones with a pier.)
My Favorite Products/Objects?
Kenner Super Powers. I collect the DC Heroes still in package, unpunched, and they’re displayed in their cases on my toy shelf.
My Current Passions?
Witchcraft, Santeria, etc. The best part of being a screenwriter is the research- so many different worlds to explore and portray truthfully.
