For more than a decade Angelyn Shapiro has helped yogis of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds discover their strengths, overcome limitations, and understand how yoga can help them on and off the yoga mat. Drawing from her own experience with infertility, extensive research, and work with more than 100 women facing similar challenges, Angelyn pioneered a curriculum that uses yoga and mindfulness to promote healing for body, mind, and spirit. Registered with the Yoga Alliance at the ERYT-500 level, Angelyn also holds separate certifications in prenatal yoga and yoga for children. She is especially proud to offer the first weekly yoga and fertility class in Washington D.C. When not on her yoga mat, Angelyn is blessed to practice the yoga of life with her husband Jeff, their miracle baby Adeline, and an incredible community of friends and family.
What do I do best?
I thrive when I see a need and am able to meet it. With clients that might take the form of helping them push through a plateau or (self-imposed) limitation - or creating an offering specifically designed to address the challenges of a population that has been overlooked.
In my personal life it might be offering to give a busy neighbor a break by watching her kiddo for an afternoon or sending a care package to a friend across the country who is struggling to adapt to a new environment. I believe even the smallest gestures can make a big difference.
What makes me the best version of myself?
The best version of myself arises when I have the space to breathe, move, and connect with the people I love. Achieving this requires me to establish priorities and set boundaries around work and social commitments. When our own wells are full we are better able to pour into others.
What are my aspirations?
I am thrilled to be launching the first fertility-focused weekly yoga class in our nation's capital beginning in May! My dream is for this offering to grow to meet the needs of the thousands of women in our area who are struggling with infertility and provide hope and support for their journey.
My greatest personal aspiration is to raise a strong, smart, kind, and confident woman who is a blessing to those who know her.
My Biggest Success?
I am most proud of making the difficult decision to leave a fulfilling and secure career to create a business that helps others and allows me to invest more time and energy into my family.
My Most Challenging Moment?
My world was shaken when I realized we would not be able to start a family in the traditional way. In hindsight it is easy to dismiss the years of treatments, struggles, and disappointments as "worth it," but in the moment - with no way of knowing how things would unfold - it was terrifying to accept my failings, ask for help, and RECEIVE help.
This isn't exactly a motto, but it is a quote that really changed the way I think about this journey we call life...
"For a long time it seemed to me that real life was about to begin, but there was always some obstacle in the way. Something to be got through first, some unfinished business; time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life could begin. At last it had dawned on me that these obstacles were my life."
My Favorite People/Role Models?
My mother is both my role model and one of my favorite people. Her journey was not easy or conventional, but she was able to rise above circumstances to provide incredible security and certainty for her family. There was never a doubt in my mind that I was loved and could be and do anything I dreamed. I hope to be able to do the same for my daughter.
My Favorite Places/Destinations?
New. York. City. It's magical. No matter how many times I visit I can't get enough of the energy and rhythm. It is the collision of a million different worlds and represents endless possibilities. There is nowhere quite like it.
My Favorite Products/Objects?
Books! Reading enables me to explore new possibilities, places, and ideas. It can be a source of inspiration, motivation, and/or relaxation. A close second would be any device that allows me to listen to NPR. Some have suggested I am addicted...
My Current Passions?
In this season of life I am focusing on savoring simple pleasures: preparing and enjoying a beautiful meal with my husband, treating my daughter to weekly bookstore dates, studying classical guitar, and losing myself in a good novel.
