Jeanne Marie Spicuzza: Writer, Actress, Producer, Director, Painter & Herbalist

My NativeAdVantage:

Jeanne Marie Spicuzza began staging plays in her neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of six and hasn’t quit since. She’s a writer, actress, producer, director, painter and herbalist, and the founder of Seasons & a Muse Inc., Productions and Studios. A member of the Alliance of Women Directors, Film Fatales and Cinefemme, Jeanne Marie earned her B.A. in philosophy and psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. While working on her M.A. in philosophy, she studied acting in London and Los Angeles, and art history in Italy.

A finalist, nominee and winner of various awards, including the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, the Golden Headset Award, the National Organization for Women “Woman of the Year,” the Shepherd Express Best Performance Artist of the Year, and The Pushcart Prize in poetry, Jeanne Marie is an international poet and performer, published in A Gathering of Tribes, Blue Fifth Review, The Nervous Breakdown and others. Her premiere feature thriller "The Scarapist" won best picture at the Berlinale European Film Market, and screened at festivals, including a world premiere at LA Femme Film Festival. After its limited release in Landmark Theatres, "The Scarapist" is now available on Amazon, iTunes and more. Jeanne Marie is currently in post-production of her second motion picture, “Night Rain,” She’s pitching two additional projects, “Making Angels” and “Breath of God,” and is writing two new screenplays. A mother and grandmother, Jeanne Marie lives in Los Angeles with her husband, film composer and drummer, Guy Hoffman.

What do I do best?

Empathize. I think it’s a superpower that no artist can be without.

What makes me the best version of myself?

Motivation. I was given early doses by way of applause, and my daughters. Being a single mother at seventeen means you must succeed, and not only for yourself. You learn to think about others that much more, and early.

What are my aspirations?

a. To be an incredible wife, mom, grandmother and friend.

b. To make “Breath of God: The True Story of Hildegard von BIngen.” And to form two dream factories before I leave this earthly reprieve.

My Biggest Success?

Surviving, and doing what I love. When an audio segment of my screenplay “Breath of God: The True Story of Hildegard von BIngen” was requested for inclusion in Judy Chicago’s historical feminist installation, “The Dinner Party,” at the Elizabeth Sackler Center in the Brooklyn Museum, that was pretty amazing. I’d say that, along with the night I found out that my premiere motion picture, “The Scarapist,” won the Verein Deutscher Kritiker Und Filmemacher Award for Best Picture at Berlinale, and when I was nominated for The Pushcart Prize in poetry. Oh, and when I caught a pop fly that resulted in the last out of my sixth grade little league game, winning against the only undefeated team. My dad did a celebratory handstand.

My Most Challenging Moment?

My scarapist experience, which inspired the motion picture, was by far the most challenging. Betrayal and mutilation, especially at the hands of a therapist, is painful. One of the most difficult things to overcome is shame. One of the most difficult things to learn is forgiveness. It’s good to know that we can create something beautiful from something ugly.

My Motto?

I’ll fall because I wish to fly.

My Favorite People/Role Models?

Jeanne d’Arc, Hildegard von Bingen, Jesus of Nazareth, Francis of Assisi, Elia Kazan, Lina Wertmüller, Curtis Hanson, John Alton, Judi Dench, Gene Tierney, Audrey Hepburn, John Patrick Shanley. Jen Benka, Dorothy Parker, ee cummings, Guy Hoffman, St. John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Thomas Merton, Jerome Schroeder, Len Dacquisto, Rabia al Adawiyya

My Favorite Places/Destinations?

My Favorite Products/Objects?

My herbal skin care line, Womanness.

My Current Passions?

I love to watch talent. Real human talent. I absolutely thrive on it. It makes me shiver, it’s so thrilling to see what people can accomplish. And I love to participate in that. I’m the Dian Fossey of actress-writer-producer-directors.
