Jackie Stauffer: Founder & CEO, RECESS

Jackie Stauffer is the founder and CEO of RECESS. A lifetime athlete with a love of health and wellness from a young age, Jackie channeled her passions as a marketing expert for global luxury lifestyle brands including Estee Lauder, Equinox, and Food52. Stauffer’s entrepreneurial spirit is what drove her to carve out a new category and create RECESS. Jackie experienced her “a-ha” moment while working out on her lunch hour, frustrated that she didn’t have time to wait in the shower line before returning to her desk. Inspired by the shared dilemma of the women waiting with her to shower, Jackie knew there had to be a way to combine convenience, efficiency, and personal care. She combined her love of problem-solving with over a decade of marketing expertise to craft a product at the intersection of fitness, travel and personal care, and RECESS was born.

What do you love most about Your City?

I’ve lived in the Gramercy neighborhood of Manhattan for 13 years and am obsessed with the fact that I can walk to anything – a workout, the grocery store, a friends’ place, dinner, work, meetings, parks. It’s so liberating to know that my feet can take me anywhere I want to go.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I go through phases, but am particularly into yogurt + fruit + granola combos. One favorite is at Gotan downtown.

What are you doing at:

6:00 AM - still sleeping :)

10:00 AM – as an entrepreneur every day is different, so it varies between catching up on emails, being in meetings, working out, or taking my dog (he’s a Chihuahua rescue) for a quick walk.

12:00 PM - Favorite Power Lunch spot/meal?

During the day I a) usually have zero time to eat and b) I try to really stay fueled with fruits, veggies, and protein for maximum energy + efficiency. I love a salad or grains bowl with greens and protein. One favorite is the bowl with shredded beef from Local Leaf or the kale salad with goji berries and grilled chicken from Ruby’s.

7:00 PM - I usually eat a home-cooked (aka husband-cooked) dinner around 7pm. I also try to make sure that when I wrap up my work for the day, I’m organized for the next day. I have calendar OCD and am extremely conscientious about time management since I mostly create my own structure each day. Organization is life.

11:00 PM – I’ve been attempting to read more lately and try to get off the screens (phones and TV). I still like printed materials – books + magazines. It’s satisfying to turn real paper pages and not have any notifications popup!

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

WATER. I used to be the worst at drinking water, but I now have tons of cute cups and water bottles with straws that help me stick with it. From energy, to skin, to allergies – I swear water is a cure-all. My more fun beverage is frose and while I would love to drink more, I think 2 is officially my max.

Most used App/Favorite Instagram Account?

I’m a nerd and use dark sky and weather underground multiple times/day. Especially when you’re walking to most places and spend the day running around, being prepared for the weather is key. I’ve always been fascinated with the weather too and if I was better at earth science, would’ve probably been a meteorologist.

What should everyone try at least once?

Something new! I always tell young folks just entering the work world, pick something new to do once a week. It can be anything you want, but push yourself outside your comfort zone consistently and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish and how much you’ll grow.

Where do you enjoy getting lost?

Any tropical location. Mykonos is a favorite – grab a scooter and just get lost on a random hidden beach, but really any tropical paradise. Some other favorites are Belize and Bermuda.
