Power Publicist: Liz Kaplow, Founder & CEO, Kaplow Communications

Liz Kaplow is the founder and CEO of Kaplow Communications, a leading public relations and communications agency that connects brands and products with consumers and influencers through the art of storytelling. She founded the agency in 1991 and has built it into one of the top mid-sized PR agencies in the country. Today, Kaplow is recognized not only for its strong media and influencer relations capabilities, but also its innovation in social, digital and content creation. The combination has earned the agency many awards and honors, including the coveted Holmes Report “Consumer Agency of the Year” and a Gold Sabre Award for Branded Journalism.  

 Liz Kaplow is also President of New York Women in Communications, a member of the Board of Governors of Cosmetic Executive Women, and an advocate for the advancement of women into leadership roles.

1) How did you get into the PR industry and why? 

I didn’t start out planning to pursue a career in public relations. I was an English major at Vassar. My fascination with language and authentic storytelling grew out of a senior project on the poet William Carlos Williams. The plain, authentic language he used in writing about the people of Paterson NJ was compelling.

After graduation, I completed a one-year advertising communications program. That’s when I first discovered and fell in love with public relations, which at its core, is all about storytelling. I spent the next decade working for a PR firm here in New York before I launched my own agency.

More than two decades later, finding authentic brand stories and amplifying them remains my greatest passion. Now, with so many new forms of communication, authentic storytelling has never been more relevant. That belief is shared by everyone at Kaplow, and it is what fuels us every day.

2) How does your firm utilize social media and stay ahead of competitors?

We recognized early on that social media offered a way to share our clients’ brand stories more directly with the consumer. We were quick to adopt social and digital tools, integrating them into our campaigns with traditional media and influencer tactics. These efforts became so important that we created a digital division within the agency in 2008.

But our success is about more than social media. Two things that really set us apart from others in our industry are: (1) our access to influencers: we connect brands to the people they really need to know; and (2) our commitment to creating innovative strategies that set brands apart in consumers’ minds.

3) What is a great night out like to you?  

Listening to live music. I also love a great night in watching Shark Tank with my family. You can learn a lot about people and business.

4) What brands do you rep and what is the niftiest PR move you have implemented for them?

Kaplow works with clients across such diverse categories as beauty, fashion, retail, lifestyle and consumer technology. We partner with such world-leading brands and companies as Target, Skype, the Avon Foundation, Unilever, Timex, CVS and Laura Mercier. 

There have been so many exciting experiences and successful campaigns over the past two decades: from putting the Tar-jay back in Target to making Skype a household word, from turning Timex into a fashion icon to raising awareness of ovarian cancer through the Laura Mercier Ovarian Cancer Fund. I love the fact that we are able to change conversations and help consumers fall in love with these great brands.

5) What is your life motto/quote?

TREE: it’s a beautiful image for me. The letters stand for Trust, Respect, Energy and Enthusiasm. Everything grows from there.

6) What would you say are the top two personality traits someone needs to do a PR job well?

First, perseverance and resilience:  you need to be persistent, to never take “no” for an answer.  And, when you do get knocked down with a “no,” to get right back up and try again.

Second, you must embrace change:  be willing to take risks, and to say “yes” to new challenges.

7) Who is your mentor and how do you stay so successful in the PR industry?

I’ve had – and continue to have -- many mentors: some are clients, some are friends, and some are strangers. I learn something new from them every day.

But it was my very first mentors – my mom and dad -- who gave me the critical tools that I needed to be successful in this industry.

My dad, a textile executive, taught me good old-fashioned problem solving -- by sharing his work stories, answering my questions and even asking my opinion. My mother, a talented artist, taught me to look for creative answers -- to approach every situation like a blank canvas that is a chance to create something new.  Those are tools I use every single day.
