My Native Admission Statement: I am a loving mom, a driven entrepreneur, and a passionate designer who believes the truest form of success is giving back in a meaningful way. My goal in life is to spread the message that we all have the power to leave this world better than we found it. It is our responsibility to use the talents we’re given to do good.

How did you get into the industry?

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and I couldn’t ignore the potential of the white space I was noticing in the industry for quality designs made with genuine stones, at a price any woman could afford. So I set out to design my own. I took a few jewelry making and wire wrapping classes, sought out the most beautiful stones I could find, and created the designs I knew women like me had been searching for. Then, I took my box of handmade designs door to door around Austin (with my newborn son on my hip) hoping that someone would give me a chance. I always joke that I don’t know if the stores felt sorry for me or just loved the jewelry. But the truth is, that personal contact made all the difference. By meeting with these stores face-to-face, they understood that I was a real person, creating high-quality and attainable jewelry that I was passionate about.

My Native Admission Statement: I am the the founder of Happily Ever Borrowed, which helps women to rent their bridal accessories for their wedding day. Our mission is to not only help brides save money, but to also help reduce the waste of the wedding industry. She continues to juggle her work life in the luxury fashion industry with her startup venture. I’m still hustling and working 2 jobs! I’d love to grow Happily Ever Borrowed and maintain it as my sole role. My biggest success so far is serving over 1000 brides! We hope that brides at the end of the day feel beautiful in their accessories and don’t feel guilty about the price! We want our bride’s experience to be stress-free and for them to have a seamless day.

How did you get into the industry?

I have three older sisters, and from the age of 12, I was helping to plan their weddings. When I was in college and designing bridal gowns, my one sister asked me to make hers. That was far too much pressure for me, but I offered to help shop with her. When I saw the poor quality and construction of the cheaper gowns, I was horrified. All women deserve to wear quality products on their wedding day. We were also astonished at the high prices of veils, headpieces and jewelry. After spending their entire budget on their dress, most women forget that they need to accessorize as well! This is one of the most common instances where brides exceed their budget. My sisters begged me to find a solution. I let the idea sit for quite a while, but after my 3rd sister got married, the idea started to materialize.

My Native Admission Statement: I’ve been fortunate enough to spend the past seven years – nearly the entirety of my professional career – at PAPER Magazine. Now, as Executive Editor, I’m responsible for overseeing our four print issues from top to bottom. I’ve been lucky to work on exciting projects like our recent Amanda Bynes cover story, a shoot with Rihanna at a NYC bodega at 2am and a crazy cover shoot with Leo Messi and a bunch of real-life goats in Barcelona. You only get one chance to make a good first impression so whether it’s a cold call, a cover letter or email, make sure it counts. I can’t tell you how many times people have emailed me and referred to the wrong magazine or misspelled my name – that is grounds for definitely seeing the email go in the trash folder. It’s also important to toe the line between being confident and poised while also being respectful and deferential…if you get the ratios wrong, it can really backfire.

Favorite breakfast meal & restaurant?

I love the bagel, smoked salmon and cream cheese at Black Seed bagels.

What drink do you need to get through the day and at the end (and how many)?

Coffee and black tea in the morning (1-2 cups black tea when I first wake up followed by 1-2 cups coffee mid-morning) and then red wine at night (1 glass if I’m just at home or 2 if I’m out to dinner).

How did you get into the industry?

Flexi Lexi Fitness started when I was pregnant with my first son Troy in 2014. I was practicing prenatal yoga and found that the sports bras were really too tight definitely for pregnant ladies whose breasts usually increase a few cups. I was at the point where I was wearing a bikini instead of a sports bra. That’s when I was thinking that maybe we could invent a “bralette” – like a sports bra but gives not too much support (medium) and 100% comfort and also style. That was when Flexi Lexi started with the first yoga Lexi bralettes. Then the other lines came soon after.

Career Advice? Never ever say “it’s not my job”. I think it’s always beneficial to learn new skills and learn new things. It makes you resourceful and helps you acquire versatile skills.
